Been looking back though the mod threads and so far havent seen what Im looking for.
Which is to mess with the atmosphere and make it toxic to dwarfs or remove the air entily for the outside.

Basic idea is to have a colony on the moon/alien planet. With the air outside toxic or just the lack or air, they have to live inside all the time.
One idea I had was to have the world covered a invisible gas that produced a syndrome of choking or similiar.
Problems:
Air is everywhere so how to seperate the inside from outside. Airlocks? how to stop syndrome spreading like plague. Should be a gas I think with some way to wash it off perhaps or a way to blow it out side. Don't think airpressure exists though which might effect that idea.

I have been away from dwarf fortress for a while and like how it has expanded in general and how modding has expanded as well. So anyone wishing to expand upon this, Can we alter the atmosphere of the world? would like to see if this part is viable idea before going to mod other parts such as mineral structure of the world, animals or plants.

No, this can't be done since dwarves actually live in a vacuum.

Unfortunately I cannot think of much way for the gas to automatically "renew"

hmmm...Vermin creatures renew and could be made to boil away into clouds, try that!

Start with a boiling cat or something.

Changing the temperature of the world to ultra-deathly cold or burn-on-contact hot might create the same effect. Won't really replicate the dangers of a hull/ bulwark breach though. Still simulate an awfully inhospitable planet though.

Might need to mod in some sort of heat-proof clothing, to act as a 'space suit' but I think mouths and cheeks still burn/ freeze on contact no matter how your clothing is set up...

Maybe make common objects like vermin from the surface boil away into toxic gas as well?

I don't know if it's possible, but is it possible to make rock or a liquid constantly secrete gas

If so, just find a way to make the top level for the entire world made of that rock.

Sorry cam, but boiling objects are destroyed, so probably vermin is the only thing that will work.

I'm not sure at all what a boiling shrub might do - that's worth a go (though the vermin is a better chance, since shrubs might be hard-coded not to react until you harvest them)

Make them aquatic and assume water is the atmosphere.

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...
Link for full quote. 'tis mighty funny.

This is a disappointment, which frys that idea.
will give the dangerous vermin a go, for hell of it.

On the space suit, nearest I coul find was someone wanting to make a heat proof suit but was a problem with the eyes and mouth having no coverage. Thread died before it got answered so not sure. be annoying if you can't fully seal a suit.

Some kind of combusting grass might be more efficient since it's frequently replenished.

Yeah, vermin would be good. Grass might work too. If grass works, that will be the best, since it replenishes itself quickly and is nearly ubiquitous.

I see one major flaw in your mod. You always embark outside. Your starting 7 would die instantly.

Not true! DF has a vague simulation of air pressure. Also, with no air, how would dwarves drown?

OP: Roleplay it. Embark on a (cold?) rocky wasteland, dig some craters, and build a glass bubble around the entrance.

Uh, what simulation of air pressure?  And you don't need air to drown, just water (or lack of it if you're a fish).

I can't claim to have experimented with this myself, but I've read that caveins draw dwarves in, presumably by something like air pressure.
And if there is no air, why do dwarves care? If they're undewater, that is. If dwarves live in vacuum, they cannot need to breathe, so submerging in water would have no effect whatsoever unless there is actually air and dwarves breath it. QPD.

The "vacuum effect" is probably dust pushing dwarves around, just like how UNDIRECTED_DUST as a creature attack will push everything around and pull things in weird directions.

Air/Water breathing is an arbitrary token switch. The game can easily ignore the idea of air by only taking account fluids like water and magma.

Water breathing can easily be thought of "if this creature is not in a fluid, it will suffocate".
Likewise, only having the ability to breathe air can easily be thought of as "if this creature is in a fluid, it will suffocate".
Amphibious can be thought of as "I do not care if the creature is in a fluid or not".

None of these really bring in actual air, only the interaction of a creature with fluids, which sort of creates the "illusion" of breathable air.
