Which armor pieces should be adamantine?
« on: May 27, 2011, 10:28:27 pm »

I was recently able to get all my military (except Hammerdwarves for obvious reasons) adamantine weapons. However, I don't want to waste adamantine on useless armor pieces when I have relatively high quailty steel armor. Which armor pieces should I replace with adamantine?

Helms are top priority, followed by breastplates. Once you've got quality steel armor, really the only things that will hurt your soldiers are blunt attacks, for which you rigid armor pieces are most effective at preventing. That means things like helms, breastplates, greaves, boots, and gauntlets, but obviously head and torso protection is the most important.

I usually just choose one or two important dwarves, who are amazingly badass, then give them a full set of adamantine armor.
It should be used for more important things. Like chairs.

I can see you've never had a tantrum spiral.  Dwarves are immune to all damage, except for a slap to the head, at which point the skull is jammed into the brain, tearing the brain!

A sock itself is quite harmless.  One thread provided a bronze colossus beating a dog with a sock for several decades.  The issue is not the sock itself, but rather the goblins standing beside the sock.  Dwarven greed is the pinnacle of self-destruction, be it digging down to the deepest treasures, rising up for the greatest loot, or demanding JUST ONE MORE dragonfly leather waterskins.

Have to agree with helmet and breastplate. You don't want your maces and shields to be addy either, shield defense isn't modified by material so actually the best moodless shield material is copper IIRC - heaviest means best "shield bash" attack.

I do helmet and mail shirt since my marksdorf uniform doesnt include a BP.  Prevents insta-kills whereas addy other pieces prevent limb loss

Basic gear for all melee dwarves should be addy helm + mail shirt.

As a nice touch, I have all my soldiers also wear stolen goblinite breastplates, just to show off.

We're talking about either steel shirt + addy plate or addy shirt + steel plate here. Probably not that much difference anyway. If I had ONLY limited adamantine then of course I'd use a shirt because it covers more. However shirts are flexible and I think the rigidness of addy is better suited to the breastplate.

On the topic of shield material, is a wooden shield any good?
My militia commander grown attached to a wooden shield and I'm hoping that's not a bad thing.

Material of the shield doesn't matter as long as you don't plan on using it as a weapon.

Just don't let your commander pay a visit to a dragon.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

Wooden shields seem to stop dragonfire just as well as any other material - yes, I know that doesn't make any sense....

Yes it does. Wood is flammable but it doesn't combust VERY easily. Of course, prolonged fire of any kind would indeed turn it into a neat bar of charcoal (I wish you could turn wooden items into charcoal) but a very short period of flame wouldn't result in the shield catching fire.  :-\
