Mars Simulation Project

http://mars-sim.sourceforge.net/

Basically you observe researchers on mars attempting to do science and exploration.

So, basically dwarf fortress with more seriousness and less player input.

On a side note, is there a dwarf fortress mod placed in space?

Are their hostiles? Because I don't want to just watch scientists classifying rocks and stuff. At least not for that long.

Not that I ever saw.  It's basically exactly what it looks like - a "business" management-sim composed entirely of spreadsheets.  It's detailed sure, but like a lot of high-detail low-immersion simulators, it never really tells what you're supposed to be doing or how to accomplish anything besides move stuff around and watch resource counters tic by.  As far as I remember, you don't even really "settle" the place yourself, you just start off with a population of a few hundred scientists scattered over a bunch of identical settlements, and try to fulfill "missions" given to you.

This kinda sounds more like a job than a game.

Is there any way to kill your scientists, perhaps to harvest their sweet sweet science bones?

I am surprised.  This...program has a UI denser and less user friendly than Aurora does.

Can I make the scientists have "unfortunate accidents" by opening airlocks or something? Making them go on expeditions they never come back from? Tantrum spirals???

As far as I can tell: no.  In fact, the only thing I did figure out that you can actually DO is create and abort missions.  Aborting a mission just makes them come back home (and activates their emergency beacon).

Well, this just seems a bit too much like a digital ant farm.

This is more of a sociology simulator than a game, and player--or rather, researcher input is limited to controlling certain base functions like water electrolysis, ordering production for things like gaskets in a workshop, or food in a greenhouse, and creating missions. All of these can be automated, but there is still a good chance that 50% percent of all personnel would die in the first year by either suffocating in a malfunctioned rover in the middle of nowhere, or starving/dehydrating in an undersupplied base if you just let the AI do everything.

Good thing is that this has been, and is still in, active development for more than ten years, and there are probably no better simulators of its kind out there that's also free and open-sourced.

How is that even possible without the universe imploding?
