Separate Boxes and Bags
« on: May 27, 2011, 12:07:44 am »

Let's do this thing. I can easily mass-macro place beds, cabinets and statues, should the mood strike me, but I have to carefully and obnoxiously scrawl my way through lists to make sure I place coffers and not bags. Is it so hard to make bags and boxes separate stockpiles?

I don't make boxes, and problem solved!

This does annoy me when I make them though, but I'm not sure boxes have enough significance to have their own stockpile. This should be a definite must when (if) the economy ever rolls around, or some other event that boosts the usefulness of boxes.

When you've got the please a noble with a coffer, or help your hospital, it becomes annoying. My bags are for sand, seeds, and milled plants- they don't go in a room unless their an artifact or banded with diamonds.

I must agree, I recently set up a stockpile in my living area to take all masterwork furniture I need, so that I can easily place my full masterpiece rooms macroing. It finished, and 99% of the rooms had a masterwork bag in them. -.-

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...

THIS. THIS IS AN EVIL THAT MUST BE STOPPED. I WILL NEVER WANT A JEWEL INCRUSTED BAG UNTIL DWARVES START NEEDING PURSES.

I make sure that all of the bags I own are filled with sand. Leave Collect Sand on repeat at the glassmaker, and wait until you get "needs viable bag" error, and you shouldn't have to worry about them nearly so much.

I do agree though, boxes and bags should be separated from each other. Though they have the same functionality, they're very different, and more, boxes can be on average much more valuable, if you make them from gold and stud them with gold. Valuable bags either take too many steps, or the one sacred resource that is never to be wasted (ESPECIALLY NOT ON BAGS).

I'm Urist McShepard, and this is my favorite suggestion on the citad---forum.

Well maybe not favorite, but I do approve.

This! So annoying when you are placing furniture. I can't think of too many other types of furniture that has more than one model. I don't understand why they're grouped anyway. What dwarf would want a silly bag over a dwarvenly chest-o-gold anyway? I don't even care if they go in the same stockpile, just separate the placement of each from the other

I'm not sure bags should be things you place as furniture at all.

You mean dwarf should carry bags around as named Urist McSanta?  8)

In designer perspective I think it's just an oversight.

Well, when you get fancy artifact bags that menaces with spikes of diamonds and the butcher's boy, you want to display it. But it really doesn't come up too often.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There could be a separate build menu item for bags only, solving both problems. Sort of related to how rock pots and barrels are mostly the same but fall in different stockpiles.

Add my vote!
Just remove this obnoxious "containers" section and separate coffers and bags, please!
