There is strength in numbers. A single person could not hope to build an entire skyscraper by him- or herself, at least, not in any sort of reasonable time scale. When many commit to a single task, they can accomplish great things together.

But it is difficult to direct the strength of many toward a single task. Mankind (and most other –kinds) is made up of individuals, many of whom have their own dreams and desires that do not conform with or go contrary to the plans of a society at large.

And so there is division. Many have thrown their lot in with the Space Forces, who offer power and the opportunity to do great things, in exchange for accomplishing their goals. There are others, still, who decide to strike out on their own in pursuit of their own dreams. The latter are known as Freelancers.

The choice is yours. Will you join the Space Forces or acquire your own ship to seek your fortune among the stars?

(OOC: Okay, that was probably more than a little bit cheesy. Anyway, the basic premise is that everyone is either part of the Space Forces or a Freelancer. The Space Forces have access to a lot of swanky gear and ride around in a huge starship, but they must follow any orders received from Space Forces Central Command. Freelancers can take their ships and go do whatever they want, but their ships would be charitably called “a bucket of bolts” and they only have access to what they can afford. I’ll play the part of Star Forces Central Command and various other NPCs. All actions will be roleplayed by players and myself and everyone is free to make up any setting details on the spot (this is actually encouraged, in fact) as long as they do not use this ability to create or acquire for themselves Magic, Psionic, or Supernatural Powers or Artifacts, or Sufficiently Advanced Technology.

EDIT: I've changed a part in the rules (#3) that may have led to some confusion.
EDIT 2: Added rule #7, which was mentioned in the starter thread but never actually added.

Space Forces Personnel: You are about to embark upon the newly constructed Galactic Protectorate Collective's Ship Taission, on her maiden voyage. Your first mission will be to go to the Jhordian System to convince it's people to join the Collective. They are a stubborn people, who think they can defend themselves from any attack. Show them the error in their thinking.

Freelancers: how you make your money is your own business. Whether you seek your fortune in trade, mining, ferrying passengers, odd jobs, "odd jobs", treasure hunting, or whatever, somehow your going to need to pay the bills. The best place to find jobs or people willing to buy what you have to offer is at your nearest spaceport.

(OOC: Freelancers don't know about the Space Forces move on Jhordian yet. Just so you know.)

Taric picked up his bag, the ship was ready for most of the personnel to come aboard after it's maintenance session. The infantryman marched inside with his companions-in-arms and headed to the living quarters. Once there, he was shown his squad's room, A spartan filled with 10 bunks, 10 lockers and with every locker opened. Taric placed his equipment in the locker marked for him and he then sat upon his designated bunk, waiting for the rest of the squad to arrive.

Daniel wonders what to do on this spaceport. He certainly won't be going to the dive bar, for undisclosed reasons. Perhaps he'll find someone at the market selling something useful, or find a hobo guarding navigational maps.

Why does everyone stare at me like that when I am out in public somewhere? thought Hikari as he wandered through the Starport looking for a job. " Well I quess it is to be expected since I walk around with Raijin on my back people just aren't used to seeing someone carry a sword around. " Hikari mumbled, and continued to walk around asking if anyone had a job for a freelancer to do, or if there are any rumors regarding Space Forces movements.

7476 gave a nod of approval as he surveyed his new home. Though impractically large, monstrously inefficient, and full of gaping design flaws justified by "intimidation" value (he still had trouble grasping the concept), his chances of survival on this vessel were much higher than the smaller cruisers he might otherwise have been assigned to. He proceeded to board, and began searching for his living quarters.

Thomas landed the ship on a spaceport, a dusty old place without much pleasant decor. He got out, and started to search around for someone who looked like they might have had a job for him.

(OOC: Freelancers are free to come up with their own missions and acquire goods from merchants and hobos freely. Sorry if I didn't make that clear before. You don't need to wait on me for everything.)

"Does no one in this place have a job we can do?" thought Hikari as he passed a store filled with wierd looking meats hanging in the window, and just as he was about to give up a man says " Well if it isn't The Demon of Shadows, Shizume Hikari in the flesh. " Hikari turning to look at him says " Hey Thomas you got a job you want me to do if not then leave me alone." the man sat staring at Hikari for a minute with his dark green eyes like he could see your soul or something. After another minute passed he finally says " Yay, I have a package for you to deliver to the Jhordian system, and before you ask the pay is 600,000 credits."  as soon as Hikari heard the amount he thought "If its another Rakgar I am going to kill him. " then looking at him he says " You got a deal, but I want 300,000 up front, and so help me if its another Rakgar your head is going to be decorating the front of my ship. " the man reaches down beside him, adn picks up two briefcase one he puts on teh tables, and opens showing you 300,000 credits. " So the other one is the package what is it? " asked Hikari as he took the money from the briefcase, adn put it in hsi pocket. After Hikari finished putting the money away Thomas replied " That is not nessecary info needed to complete the job just take it, and get it to the military forces in the Jhordian sytem, adn don't worry I am not tlaking about the Space Forces. Now if you will excuse me I have somewhere to be." with that Thomas got up, adn walked off while Hikari pulled a com unit out of his right pocket, and began speaking " Hey get the ship ready for departure I have a job for us in the Jhordian system, and I want to get going. Also make sure you have all teh supplies moved onboard by the time I get there. " then hanging up Hikari made his way back to the ship to finish preparations for the mission.

Hav'lishloc stepped into the spaceport, he exosuit dully glimmering in the harsh, artificial light. He opens a com-link with the station's computers, accessing a map of the station. He then walks off in the direction of the station's market.

(OOC: Also, Space Forces can proceed to the Jhordian System at any time; they just needed to receive their mission before we could start.)

Daniel comes back from the market with a navigational computer, food and water, a camouflaged and armored spacesuit and a Gauss Rifle with no accompanying ammo unfortunately. It damn near left him broke, though. So, he goes off to find a job. He ended up getting a job from a seedy looking individual near the roulette table at the bar, and the job was simple. "Deliver this cargo to the spaceport near Vega, in this specific docking area." The docking area is specified. "You don't want to know what happens if you dock in the others." Daniel doesn't question the job at all, at least the credits will be enough to sustain him for a month. He sets off nearly immediately. What can possibly go wrong with delivering probably (il)legal cargo?

OOC: If you’ve joined my crew I’ll leave it up to you to determine if you’ve just signed up or have been with me a while.

As Patrick O’Kelly entered the bar and looked at the menu written on a nearby chalkboard he shook his head as he examined the prices.  The latest shipment of ore that the Knave had mined had garnered much les than the Captain had anticipated. New GPC tax hikes, or so his broker had claimed. It was just another reason to head farther away from the Collective’s reach. And it didn’t get much farther than Kettle. Named by a rather original explorer who was enamoured by the shape of the planet’s main continent, not unlike a big teakettle.

Kettle was a backwater for a reason. Several reasons really. One was because it was unforgivably hot. Much closer to its native star than Earth, Kettle was a large desert. Second, Kettle stunk. Patrick wasn’t sure of the exact reason, but some element in the atmosphere gave the planet a perpetual stench of death. Frankly, the only reason it was colonized in the first place because of mineral deposits which happened to be buried too deep to get at without more expensive equipment. When the big companies weren’t willing to pony up the creds to bring in the big drills, most of the remaining business left.

But, thankfully that meant, that independent business men like Patrick and his crew could make transactions without the watchful eye of the collective, or have them reach their greedy little fingers into his already cred-strapped pockets.

He had given his crew leave to do as they pleased, hopefully most would return. Some even said they might try and find him at the bar. He was going to meet his contact, Gonzo. Gonzo had been a business contact for many years, a short, round man with a baldhead. He wore too much jewelry and had a gold-tooth, but always was trustworthy when it came to his information. His business was wreck location, abandoned ships and stations, areas with recently fought battles – anywhere that might lead to salvage or artifacts sought out in the core systems. You had to be quick about these sorts of missions, once the word got out, every vulture would be out to find their piece of the action. That’s why Gonzo was always paid in shares of the loot found.

Sitting down across the table from Gonzo, he was offered a slick grin, with his flashy gold tooth and then offered a small datapad. “This one might interest you. Could be risky though.” The broker rasped, the oppressive heat of Kettle making his bald head shine with sweat. Patrick picked up the pad and studied it with interest.

After locating his living quarters and depositing those possessions which would not fit on his person there, 7476 proceeded to the bridge and reported to the forward gunnery station, where he would aid in the operation of the Taission's formidable mass drivers.
