The flames that once made up that forgotten beast's body are now completely harmless. Creatures composed of flame are very hot when they're alive, and undergo a flare-up when they die that sets fire to any flammable stuff they're on, but afterwards they rapidly cool off. By the time the fires that that flare-up caused go out, they're cool enough to handle safely.

Going by my one and only experience with one of these buggers, their death explosion is equivalent to dragonfire and can roast even magma-safe items. It melted a trap full of masterwork steel spikes. Grumble grumble.

Never mind spikes, they melt Axe Lords. Anyone sent to fight such a beast should be considered dead dwarves walking.

I have some forgotten beast leather, as well as some mountain titan leather, in my current fortress.  Sadly, armor made from forgotten beast is no more valuable or protective than cow leather at the moment.

Also, some forgotten beasts have shells.  When you butcher an organic forgotten beast with a shell, you get a stack of usable shell material.  On many maps, this is the only way to get shells for moods.

Flame is 14000, while magma is 12000.

It's moreso plasma.

Thank you, marksdwarves, thank you. It took a handful of bolts to take down and there were no casualties. I use my marksdwarves on FBs whenever it's possible (do not like syndromes).

Point taken. I guess I still have some issues to work through about marksdwarves. (Nightmares from the early days of DF2010... So many fresh -bone bolts-, and no one wants to touch them... So much blood after depending on them to take out the goblins...)

Yikes. Then I'm very glad that I used my marksdwarves to gun that one down, too, in combination with the repeating spikes. Playing it safe was a good idea in that case.

What I do enjoy about FBs made of flame is this:

If you've got a cavern filled with water and you're prone to accidents, leading them around in the water gives you an opportunity to dredge out all of the corpses, weapons, and assorted junk that's fallen in before.

What's truly bizarre, though, is that when they walk through the water, they leave a trail of trees behind them. Seriously. They're walking along, and wherever they evaporated down to dry(muddy) ground, trees just come right up. Any ideas why?

Trees can't grow to adulthood under 7/7 water.  Saplings can still grow, so they grow to the point where they would turn into adult trees and then stop growing.  The moment the water level falls below 6/7, the tree matures.  The same thing happens if you pump the water out of an underground lake.

It's also possible to make clown leather items. Also, while equipping your military, and choosing the material, it is even possible to spy on what types of clowns the world contains.

so, with the flameburst, if we can cage a non-flying flame fb and put the cage 15z up, and drop it on a seige, we have the dwarfen nuke from the death blast

Actually, I don't know if FBs take falling damage. You could follow the drop with a cave-in, but since you've got the cavein anyway, that kind of obviates the dwarven nuke.

What you could do is make a pool the invaders or elves would have to walk through, trap them there as though it were a drowning trap, and then drop the FB in and melt them with the ensuing steam.

Dear flieroflight.

Thanks to your efforts in evading the lack of radioactive pitchblende, and designing the Dwarven Nuclear Bomb, I hereby award you with the 2nd *bloated tuber biscuit* to be given out.
