Joking aside, my friend said he washed a CD once and then let it dry extensively to help with scratches. That doesn't exactly sound like a solution but it's a better last resort than throwing the thing in the garbage.

The heat could warp it pretty badly...

On the topic of fixing cartriges one of my friends made a SNES to USB adapter to run roms off of using one of the original gameboy adapters.

I've fixed 2-3 discs usin a toothbrush and some toothpaste.

I thought this was complete lunacy when I was first heard it, but toothpaste has never failed me in the past. I tend to use something softer than a toothbrush to apply it though.
