Microsoft Flight Simulator X

Might go buy this tomorrow. Wondered if anyone was playing it?

Also wondered whether it'd be wise to get a joystick too? Any suggestions?

I have 200+ hours in flight and I have to tell you that you seriously NEED a joystick and spend at least $40 otherwise you will be disappointed. Look for one with throttle control on it. After the lengthy installation I advise the tutorial and then the missions. Good luck and enjoy!

Joystick is a must. If you want more game-like control, then get a gamepad, and setup accordingly.

Personally, any flight sim, joystick is mandatory.

Ambidextrous joysticks exist.

I have one of those. One of the features. Brand is Saitek. Model is ST290 PRO.

Just a heads up, none of my 3 Saitek joysticks lasted more than a year.
My CH joystick and throttle, however, are still functional.

I need a flight-able stick, having no hat controls is a pain in the ass!

I know, not realistic, but I've been playing it a lot with a xbox 360 gamepad. Been playing a lot with fspassengersx to give it some kind of point. I have nearing 250 hours just in fspassengersx.

If you like missions and flight lessons and stuff like that then FSX is by far the best there is for flying. XPlane is a lot easier to create aircraft of your own in though if you are into that. FSX is more like you are flying in a world that is populated. XPlane is more like you are on your own, but can make cool planes. FSX does require a decent rig. If you are close on the requirements I wouldn't even try it, however if you have a decent rig then it's deffinently a blast. I have a CH yoke and CH pedals that I use on mine. Way better than a joystick. If you are serious about flying there is no other way to go  8) Tons of missions in FSX to just have fun with also.

What sort of missions? I've got a pretty hardy rig and a Saitek X52 FCS (with the sep. throttle) but I'm not terribly interested in 'fly this load of passengers to here' or 'fly this cargo there'...

The missions are varied greatly. Some are just fly here or there, search and rescue, helicopter missions, racing, locating lost animals,...etc. There are missions for just about any taste. You can also buy tons of different addons from 3rd party authors that add missions and stuff.

Edit.. I forgot... there is also a full course of flying lessons as well :) I played it for a long time with a AMD 4800+ dual core cpu, ATI x1900xtx video card, and 2 gig ram and it did ok. Some of the missions would put me at 16 fps, but not very often. Huge airports were a killer for fps. Now I run it with a AMD quad core 3.33ghz cpu, ASUS Radeon 6870, and 8 gig ram and it is amazing now.
