I don't know. Perhaps we need some rule that once a set percentage of people did their turn, the turn will end at some time after that and those did not answer would be assumed to be doing similar things as their last turn.

One way I've considered to keep these Forum Games moving along is the ability to [Partner] a character with other non-GMs who'd either be playing with you or in the audience. Then, after a certain time period of inactivity on the main player's part, the first partner to post your character's action would temporarily take control for that turn.

If the character continues to remain uncontrolled it either goes Idle or a GM takes over.

I like evilcherry's idea better, because it's simpler. With a buddy, either every buddy has to propose alternate actions every normal action, or you've got to wait, then wait for the buddy, check who the buddy's covering for, and then go.

Of course, we could lightly mix the two and say that if you haven't posted within X of everyone else, other people get to suggest actions for you, which become the default if the GM runs the turn before you post your real action.

Simplicity?! This... is... DWARF FORTRESS! *kicks IronyOwl into a Rube Goldberg machine*

[Partner] is more essential for intensive action periods anyway. One wouldn't want their character to continue chopping wood when a goblin siege just appeared after all. For periods where death isn't a moment away players could use an Action Queue and then cancel a queue at any time to switch focus. Keeping the character to run on auto until the player wants to change their plan. EDIT: Such as engaging in RP or being more lively than a drone

Also, you're not giving the partner system enough credit. The potential partner would post Character Name and its Main Player in their post. They'd only begin to take over after a set period of say... 12 to 24 hours, depending on how fast the GM wanted the game to progress. This can be checked by everyone by simply comparing forum time stamps. If nobody responds within an additional time period, as would any inactive character, the character becomes IDLE or as you suggested, Free-For-All.

I understand that at time-intensive situations a partner system would make more sense, but since it is all calm...

Plus that the partner player has little incentive to RP anyway, being not his own character.

It's more to put control in the hands of somebody you trust. But we shouldn't distract from the thread's main purpose any more than we have.

Still need to be a bit more prompt. Keep everyone waiting every turn is not a good idea.

Whamming at the door. At this rate it will take prolly more than 1 RL month to go through a month - not a good thing if at all.

Yes, my old laptop is completely screwed and my parents had taken theirs' out on vacation. They are back now, and I'll have to make them share...  :-\

Myit keeps hunting. He'll try to spend some extra time keeping that the skin intact.

Gethor fills an empty barrel with water, confident that the other dwarves have gotten his message, and grabs some drink and stew as he surveys the greener parts of the cave.
Unused to the unsteady footing of the deeper cavern, he slips and pulls a muscle! There is no serious damage, but he'll have to stay off it for it to heal correctly.
Unfazed by such a minor injury, he continues working, planting a bag of cave wheat grains.

Zazit takes up the pick after breakfast, mining out a large room between the sleeping area and the cave entrance. He does exceptional work, and a large amount of stone is left in his wake.

Azen patrols outside the cave and at the border into the unexplored areas. The morning is uneventful, though some wolves are spotted higher up the mountain. They seem unaware of the camp.

Nevyn eats and drinks, then returns to the base of the mountain to continue the gradual deforestation.
Feeling energized this morning he works quickly, bringing in five logs.

Sandow sits down with a pile of bones, and by midday has crafted an exceptional bone helmet, as well as a slightly lesser quality breastplate.

Tholtig eats at dawn, then begins carving beds, but is hindered by a lack of refined logs as well as her inexperience. She completes one bed, and spends the rest of the morning chopping a fresh log into workable pieces.

Myit returnes to the wilderness hunting, and soon locates a herd of large animals. He chooses a male at the edge of the group, and fires.
The arrow hits the bull directly in the eye, and buries itself deep into its skull, intact. The other creatures react instantly, stampeding away from the corpse and Myit.
The animal is incredibly heavy, and Myit has a hard time dragging it back to camp. It has grey-green fur, and resembles a cow or equow, though it is slightly larger and more muscular.

Note: From now on, if most people have posted their turns, there are three consecutive days where no turns are posted, and I am ready to run the turn, I will run the turn. Objections anyone?

Three days seems too long. If you're ready to run the turn, and you've got most of the actions or it's been a while, you should probably just run the turn.

Tholtig continues to refine logs, hoping to learn a bit more about woodworking in the process.
