Non-human speech synthesis
« on: May 26, 2011, 05:21:33 pm »

A while ago, while playing with Festival, an open-source TTS, I had the idea of using non human sounds (mechanical, animal, natural) to emulate human speech patterns, for example, using clock-noises as t's and k's, and air escaping from a leak for s's and sh's, and other things like that. however, i only got about that far, and couldn't think of any other sounds that could be used. anyone have any ideas?

Using sounds as substitute for human voice would probably generate some horrific sci-fi voice. Or it would just sound absolutely silly.

It would be cool if it sounded scary.

Holy hell.  Did they think that was cute?  That was, by far, the most demonic piano I've ever heard.

Heh, I wrote my thesis on speech transformation, so I'm quite interested in whatever people want to do on the topic :P

At its base, it shouldn't really be that hard at all, just pick up lots of sounds, and match them so that they meet some kind of phonetic.
