I search the dumpster for anything that can be used as a weapon or shield.  Maybe a used syringe    If I hear shells I'll close the lid, it's not much but it should protect me from shrapnel.

It was probably a dramatic shell-they make those to land right *by* the hero, who gets blown dramatically a few feet away, none the worse for wear. There's also some ear ringing, temporary loss of hearing and slow motion.
