How can I milk troglodytes?
« on: May 26, 2011, 06:22:43 am »

So in that crazy place I call a mind, I decided to make troglodytes wagon-pulling domestic slaves and made them milkable. (With an iron bin laying caste)
But when I try to, it says that there's no creature to milk?
Help?

Assuming you've correctly copied over the "milk" (and cheese!) section from another animal's female caste to troglodyte females, you also need to make sure there's no [INTELLIGENT] tag applying to the caste you want to milk (maybe no [CAN_SPEAK] token either, not sure). Try removing any tags like this from the troglodytes.

Wait, is [CAN_LEARN] one of those tags?
Do I have to mentally cripple them?

It seems more sane to do that to elves.

Wait, is [CAN_LEARN] one of those tags?
Do I have to mentally cripple them?
I'm not 100% sure about [CAN_LEARN] this is best tested with trial and error (remove or add a single tag at a time, then test). Those tags can be applied at the caste level, so different castes can be intelligent, non-speaking, etc., so you can limit any effects to the milkable caste.

Anything which is not your main race is basically crippled anyway, they cannot do any jobs unless you use third party apps like DFusion, them gaining skills with [CAN_LEARN] is otherwise pretty useless.

BTW: Have to agree with the others - troglodyte milk? really?

It's a crazy place up in my mind. Besides, I use them for more than milking now. They have several castes that lay bins, barrels, are used as combat slaves, and spin webs.

One more thing, the webbers appear to be making troglodyte skin webs or something.
Do I have to give dwarves a new reaction for this to be made into cloth?
Or should I just collect spiderwebs and be happy that I have domesticated threadmakers?

You need to define the web material to be made out of silk.

I remember when I tried doing this to sentients but mistakenly made both castes milkable. CAN_LEARN definitely screws things up with sentients sometimes even if the other usual problems, like the presence also of CAN_SPEAK or incompatible ethics on the part of the parent civilization exist; it's just not a good idea at all for live stock creatures, no matter what kind of flavor you want for the mod.

You can guess what went through my head when you said that.
