What is this??
« on: May 26, 2011, 02:11:44 am »

On an embark location i found a strange water source thing that just makes water from nothing.
There is no water source below it or above it:

River source, I think. Awfully rare to find one though.

True.  Brook sources are as common as brooks, but stream sources you usually have to look to find.  Consider it a natural spring from the non-existent aquifer.  Or a natural rainwater drain.

What makes you say that these are rare? If there's a stream, then there has to be a source for it at one end.

It just took me about 20 seconds to find one on a freshly created pocket island. *find stream* -> *follow stream* -> there it is.

Its fairly common to find if you embark on it.  On the closest view embark map if your rectangle covers the source (start) of a brook/stream...thats what it looks like

I wish I had something cool to say about this.  Because it's really cool.

... and there's another one on the same pocket island. This time in a red sand desert. Doesn't look like they're really that excitingly rare - or do you think that my pocket island is abnormal?

... another one in a temperate Savannah.
... and another one.
... another one in a Grassland
... another one in another Savannah.
... one more in a Rocky Wasteland
.. make that two more in Rocky Wastelands.
... the human town seems to sit on another one.

Alright, this Pocket Island seems to be a bit warmer than your default parameters. Still, that's plenty of sources of streams. There are even more for brooks, before you're asking.

The "source" for streams and rivers are brooks.  It's not rare to find a brook source.

Oh so THAT'S what that weird spray-pattern was at one end of the river in Syrupleaf!  I honestly had no idea.

Definatly your standard brook/stream source.
It kind of looks outdated imo, I'd love to see glaciers and little lakes where the water collects from the mauntains then a few lines in the surface.

Nothing really rare. Just the start of a brook.

Incidently, river deltas also look like that.

I realize that. However, all of the sources I found were *stream* sources, not brooks. They aren't rare at all, really; I found them also just as quickly on less warm worlds than the one I investigated so closely.

Any time your embark area includes the dot at the end of a river, you'll get one of these. I actually find them rather annoying, especially in rivers. There's more room for my dwarves to taunt the carp.

I don't see how people think these are rare. I get one at least half of the time embarking with a water source.

You can destroy the entire river by undermining the floortiles at the very ends of those "river source" tiles.

I messed around river sources alot in 40d trying to get water without taxing my FPS.
