Millstone animated, jobs canceling from no power.
« on: May 25, 2011, 07:09:30 pm »

I'm using a one-wheel perpetual motion machine.  It seems to work fine; the animation is on for the wheel, pump, and millstone, and checking the stats shows 30 power being used.

But my jobs keep getting canceled due to the millstone not having any power.  Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?

Urist Austin, Axedwarf.  A dwarf barely alive.  Gentledwarves, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's first bionic dwarf. Urist Austin will be that dwarf. Better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster.

It's possible your PMM is "flickering," only supplying power most of the time. I'm not sure how likely that is, though.

This - using the frame advance feature, check the power output on your waterwheel over the course of a few hundred frames and you'll probably find it occasionally dropping to zero (likely due to low water levels).
In order to fix it, you'll need to enlarge your power generator.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

One of the things I have noticed is that the power coming from a Dwarven Water Reactor (check out magmawiki for the design concept) is not constant.  It irritated me to no end, but makes some sense.  The result is that I either have functional windmills or I use querns, though someday I may make use of a more logical water power system.

I can see menacing spikes of iron, but only a true dorf can make menacing spikes of dog leather or pig tail cloth!  What if they suddenly start decorating all their artifacts with like ... like ... butterflies or something.

I have had a lot of trouble powering a millstone with a waterweel. I basicly ended up using multiple wheels to make the power output as constant as possible.

Even windmills are a problem. I once had a windmill stutter to a halt after powering a millstone for a couple of years, even when a windmill right next to it was generating 40 units of power.
