Smoothing scoring lower than expected
« on: April 13, 2008, 04:34:00 am »

All smoothed walls add 8 monies to your architecture.  All smoothed floors add 6 monies to your architecture.  It does not matter what material they are made out of (several rocks, gems and ores were smoothed).  Also, constructed walls/floors score the same amount:  6 or 8, regardless of being made out of stone, blocks, metal, wood, etc.

A constructed wall outside will give 14 monies to your architecture.  It's assumed this is because it creates a wall, and the floor on the next level up.

Expected:  This value would be multiplied by the worth of whatever is smoothed (or whatever is used to construct a wall).

Also worth noting that engravings add 10*quality on wall or floor, regardless of material as well.  I wouldn't expect engravings to be modified by material type though.

Looking at the code, it seems to intentionally avoid the material modifier that comes from a dwarf's personal evaluation of the room.  I guess it could be argued that either way is fine, and I don't think I had a strong opinion at the time.  If there's a multiplier, it could really get out of control if you have a giant detailed room that you dug out in an ore vein, but then again, you'd have a giant detailed room in an ore vein, and it should be worth something.

I'd argue that smoothing an ore vein might not be too valuable, sure, but building a room out of gold blocks sure should be.  A player might not have an expectation that smoothed ore is valuable, but I feel like it's intuitively obvious that gold blocks should be really impressive to build with.

Edit:  Of course, if engravings get multiplied too, that really might get ridiculous...but since it's currently impossible to engrave on a block...well, nothing's ever simple.  Blocks take 3 of a metal, right?  Even if you COULD engrave on a block, that's blowing 3 gold bars.  Sure you get 30*10*12=3600 out of it, but a statue would be worth even more.  And blocks don't get a quality, as far as I know.  So maybe not that bad.  If ore is too highly valued, perhaps its perceived value should be lowered?  Of course that has its own problems, too...

Hmm... I'd say that value modifiers should be ADDED to the base value, rather than multiplied.  Think about it - a well crafted gold goblet is not worth much more than a crudely crafted one, simply because the value of the gold itself overpowers the craftsmanship concerns.  On the other hand, a masterfully crafted bone bracelet could be worth a fortune, probably about as much as a masterfully crafted gold bracelet, since it's the crafting that you're paying for, rather than the material.  Would the Mona Lisa be worth more if it were painted on a gold canvas?  Not particularly.  What about that "painting" you did yourself, despite having no particular artistic skill?  Yes - because the gold is worth something, even if your painting is rubbish.

Of course, the value modifiers would have to be changed to reflect usage with multiplication rather than addition.

Most interesting.

So, if you construct a wall over a smoothed floor (outside or inside), would that count for extra?  Or would it still be 14 (a smooth floor isn't built on top, just one under).

I'd need to do more testing before I figure out how it works really good.
