My wife and I thought this movie was great, but getting a little close to an R rating compared to the original.

Of course it is.

Think of it like this: Ever heard of growing up? The initial audience grew up thus the story is more mature to fit.

No, I never heard of growing up. Do go on about this fascinating new concept.

There's a place near where I live where you can see a movie for three dollars.

We have a drive-in that's only about seven bucks for two viewers, and you can bring a full picnic spread.

I watched it.

I liked it, not sure if it were good as the previous ones, and I was a little disapointed that some of the well developed characters like Will and What's-Her-Names-Who-Gets-Called-Poppins were not in it.

But still lots of humour, entertaining content, and an acceptable ending to the story.

I'll see it eventually.  Fun popcorn flick, I'm sure.  But the pirate movies have already hit their climax.  I'm not going to be expecting anything that compares to the first three.  They're just milking it now, which is fine if they just put out stuff that's decently entertaining, I guess.

As a movie it's is better than 3 and possibly 2, but you will notice that they had a much smaller effects budget. The number of pirate sea battles hovers comfortably at 0.

I liked 3.  I thought it was a fitting end to the trilogy.  I think the epic three-way inside the giant whirlpool between the main characters, the East Indian Trading Company, Davy Jones, and featuring the goddess of the sea was about the most climactic pirate battle conceivable.

The start of the movie had me going, "Okay, sequel or prequel?" Until I saw the chart, I had no idea if this wasn't the "Impersonating a Judge" incident mentioned in the first movie.

I think they planned it that way, with how the trilogy opens and closes with Jack riding through the sunset in a dinghy.  It's basically an expansion pack that could take place at any time for all it really matters.

Not that I've really seen it yet, so I'm withholding judgment.  Unfortunately, the theater I saw 1 and 3 at finally went out of business.  Tellingly, I didn't pay to see either of those movies there, and my party was still the only people in the theater.

Aqizzar, I strongly recommend seeing it as it was very much worth the movie.

And a shitton better than The Eagle. Clearly Hollywood misunderestimates the flag-waving nationalist demographic.

I honestly think that they should have ended the series at 3. That movie was rather epic, in my opinion.

Given that my main problem with the second pair of movies was how the plot and character developments were constructed as you'd see in a bad fanfic (repeat: bad, not fanfic in general), I'm not sure what to expect here. They've done away with two characters whose characters finished their arcs at the end of the first movie, which is a good step, I think. I've heard there's no explanation for where the hell this supposedly ridiculously badass pirate Blackbeard was during the whole crisis that threatened all pirates, which is a shame, but I can suspend my disbelief if it means they don't need to do a flashback or something. I could live with "The Further Adventures of Jack Sparrow", though I'd prefer not to have "The Further Antics of Jack Sparrow", if you see what I mean. I'm rambling way too much about this, aren't I?

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

To clarify, all recurring, non-major characters seemed to be cardboard cutouts of their most obvious personality traits in the first movie.

Yeah.  It's Disney.  Not much else to say.  I never ever expect non-stereotypical characters from any Disney film ever.  I appreciated the Pirates trilogy for its pacing, choreography, special effects, hamminess, and epic contexts.  I was especially pleased and surprised that they managed to wedge some mature themes in there (such as mourning the passing of the old world upon discovering the dead Kraken).  They basically did everything they possibly could within the confines of Disney, and it was pretty impressive.

Eh. I expect them to do better with characters they'd already done better, basically. I'll admit, though, my main problem with those movies is that they have to be, kind of by definition, compared to the first one. I can't really come up with a good objection that doesn't end with, "than in Curse of the Black Pearl".

The movie gets an automatic pass just from including the Spanish captain

"Someone make a note of that mans bravery." heh
