Three days isn't that fast.   I'm sure some other forum has bested it.

This game looks so awesome, it even has awesome obscure references.
Must buy...

Anyone else here have a tendency to rush smithing when going with a melee build? I really like it, at least for the first level or so, it offers the same raw damage increase of the warrior skills (although misses out on the special damage increases that the non defensive lines offer) and of you are not unlucky you can get some dead sexy gear by the time you hit the second floor I think just about the second best gear in the game, or better if you are lucky. Of course it has no magic on it, which is a bit of a draw back considering the finickiness of the anvils.

Every time I do it though I do wonder if it was the best choice though, seeing as it gives you gear to go though the first three or so levels, but logic tells me at some point your home made stuff will not be able to stand up to the items you will just find, and then you will only be left with a poor mans melee upgrade and a piddling +1 trap affinity.

Maces goes fantastically well with smithing, as you can make the Flail of Pleiades (9 crush, 3 pierce, 7 aether, +3 acc) fairly easily at skill level 4: The whole crafting process adds up to 3 iron, 1 steel, 1 platinum, and some other random stuff (the scarcely-used zoadical wand and a pyrite sun). RNG willing it's unlikely you'll be able to find anything that matches it for damage until, I'd guess, level 7 or so. Given that it's fairly cheap you'll probably be able to make a spare at some point and start using anvils safely.

With that in mind, smithing + archaeology?

a fine steel mace + ruby + infernal potion = a badass firemace. Smithing is awesome

It would be awesome if there were community leaderboards, like stonesoup!

there is a leaderboard on gaslamp games' website. You should check it out. For a few fleeting minutes I was in the top 100.

Steam already has integrated leaderboards for DoD. They're the second tab in the screen where you find achievements. You can see how you stack up globally, and against people on your friends list.

I'm on... I think floor 4, and I have 7 damage reduction on top of some pretty decent resistances and do 14 damage in melee... as a mage.  I regen mp every turn, can brew booze into boozier booze for even more MP for the off chance that I run out of MP, and have practically unlimited summons to stop enemies while I blow them to bits with fireballs.  Then, I grow mushrooms in the corpses of my enemies that are COMPLETELY unnecessary.  One mushroom makes me invisible, so I can run away if I ever somehow start to lose, or just hide while I chug buffs and potions in the case of monster zoos.  Another one can be eaten for three throwing weapons, and while they are fairly useless, the three sell for just under 200 dosh a pop.  I sold an accumulated stack of ~190 for five digits.

It's a real shame this character is only on normal...

I have one on the hardest with permadeath and while he makes incredibly slow progress, he never dies.
Massively tanky smith, with lots of buff mushrooms.
At this pace... I'm winning in 2012.
