To make squad selection infinately easier all you would need is two things.

1. Alphabetical dwarves as has been mentioned.

2. The ability to toggle on and off the military availability of each individual dwarf (as in if you toggled it off they didn't show in the listing). There would be a bit of overhead in that you would need to toggle migrants as they come in but since you are likely naming them anyway it isn't such a problem. This would make selecting a new recruit to fill out a squad as easy as selecting the next dwarf on the list.

Note: I wouldn't want current squad members completely excluded from the listing but if they were moved to the bottom of the list or in a seperate tab that would be ideal (sometimes you want to switch dwarves around in squads for training purposes).
