convert DF music to midi!
« on: May 23, 2011, 08:42:56 pm »

I'm in desperate need for a music converter, specifically one that can convert OGG files to MIDI. Basically, I want to convert song_title.ogg and song_game.ogg into MIDI, but I'd rather not use the tabs posted on the forum because no matter how faithfully made they are, they're not the same as Toady's work.

Please, can anyone help me?

"Converting" an audio file to MIDI doesn't really make sense.

The music in-game is digitized recorded audio like any other, whereas a MIDI is... well, the best analogy is probably to say that it's more like sheet music; it's a descriptor of which notes are played, and when, on which instrument(s).

So they're not really things you can interconvert, as they're totally different types of information. I believe there are programs out there that claim to be able to "listen" to a recording and produce a MIDI based on what it hears, but that's extremely flaky and imperfect at best. You'd be best off just using the tabs you've found.

I thought Toady had the sheet music for song_game lying around in some thread or another...
Aha. Second post in this thread is from Toady himself. Someone else composed tabs for the title music a little below that.

Looks like it's all incomplete, but I think that's the best anyone has.

Does it really matter if you're trying to get a midi?

What? Why? Why you would want to ruin a piece of music so?

Nice one, not sure when I'll be feeling like killing a baby but these things are good to know.
