In other words, I feel Chekhov's Gun should be in effect in that regard: If it doesn't matter, don't mention it.

Did you have any thoughts on the system, or at least what you'd like the system to do?

Oh, I was planning on all of those things having relevance. Various forms of magic made possible by the gods, etc.

I was thinking of a system similar to fiefdoms at war and civilization. You have a territory, and you can build infrastructure to increase certain aspects of the economy. Various magiks could strengthen your army, or allow for more unit options. Armies have a certain number of move points, are damaged if the diff is below ten points while rolling, etc. I'm going to ask Ituem if I can use some aspects of his game, and then i'll specify on the subject.

You might check out At the Dawn of Time for a Civilization-ish system, though it's more focused on the building and RP aspects.

How zero-sum would this be? Would there be any possible outcomes beyond one side wiping out all the others and claiming the kingdom?

The two major kingdoms could either reach a diplomatic agreement, or Kill each other. Of course, there are more people than just these two kingdoms, so random events will challenge the two forums while they build up the former kingdoms and when they have built up the foreign kingdoms.

Beyond simple victory, one side could resort to MWMD's (Magical Weapons of Mass Destruction). This could result in a game-ending scenario. Also, you have a rather high chance of getting fucked by revolutions, so that could happen.

I'll have to think some more about this, but that's what i've come up with so far.

So, something that you might consider, or it might be too different/not your cup of tea. Maybe I'll run it, in fact.

Anyway, like this, except that the concept of a kingdom is relatively well-defined. What isn't well-defined is who's in charge or whatnot- the players are playing as scheming noble houses or provinces within a kingdom, rather than totally independent powers that can declare war on each other and so on without consequence. Each forum would be its own kingdom.

Naturally, this would make for a significantly different game, but it would have it's advantages. Notably, people who dropped out could have their houses sink into the background and lose their land to someone who's replacing them, and it'd formalize the concept of "us vs them" without forcing anyone to do or not do anything.

I imagine it'd also have to be a lot more... opportunity based, I suppose, since the sort of steady and irreversible buildup you normally see in games like this might not work so well. More "invest in this opportunity," either by buying something or sending your soldiers somewhere, and then reap the rewards however that happens to go down, with new opportunities appearing and the old ones fading regularly.

Sweet. So now we have two ideas-

A cross-forum game, Tense and combat based. Each faction is independent and is in the ruins of an old kingdom.

A cross-forum game, Laid back and more cold-war based. Each faction is a part of the kingdom, and every action has a concequence.

I like this idea. You have my blessing to start it, while I work out the combat based one.

Just two. With IronyOwl's idea, this can be taken to many more, apparently.

Right, I have a roughdraft of the rules ready, just waiting for permission from Ituem.

Okay, one thing here, and I hate to be a downer but it must be said.

In Ituems game he was unable to keep up with it even though he had a program to do most of the work.

How do you plan on keeping this up? It is going to take hours of your time to run each turn, and that is in the beginning before it get complicated.

Do you really think you can handle it?

I need something to do this summer.

And if I start to slow down, I can ask one of the players to help out.

Now we just need a map.

Wellllllll... You know what is a ton of fun? Making a group map. Each of us could say what we want our areas to be and then make it (with your approval) on a blank map with the continents made out.

Or I could try to whip up a map if you want. Also though I would need to know basic land shape.

We could use Tamriel from the Elder Scrolls games. One group could start on Summerset Isle and the other could start on Vvardenfell.
