Drowning in Plump Helmets!?
« on: May 23, 2011, 05:50:12 pm »

Help! I'm drowning in plump helmets! My carpenters and smiths are fighting a losing battle keeping the purple shrooms at bay with the barrels and my brewers and cooks are struggling to convert the shrooms into something useful! Is there anyway I can battle this scourge back?

Craftsdwarf Workshop > Rock >pot.

Like a barrel, only cheaper, and easier to mass produce, because you likely have so much stone lying around.

Also, tell your dwarves to stop planting plump helmets for a while.

I don't know, maybe when the sponsored animals got in.

By the way...they're epic!

They are that. To the original question. Get more people working as chefs and make luxury meals. That should put a dent in your stocks soon enough.

Limit the size of your plump helmet stockpile.

Make a 5x5 stockpile that accepts only plump helmets, nothing else.

Forbid plump helmets from all other food stockpiles.

Doing this means you will only use a maximum of 25 barrels/pots on plump helmets, and since you can grow them all year round you will never run out of plump helmets. Extra plump helmets can just rot in the field. They don't generate miasma.

Yeah, when you have loads of plump helmets you can train grower/cook/brewer easily.

I really don't understand people that (assuming a bit of expierience) only grow helmets. Farming other plants is not THAT difficult, and while the PHs are easy, they also aren't very valuable. And variety gives good thoughts, therefore quarry bushes, sweet pods and cave wheat are good! Also, having to process them first is dwarfy, only elves gnaw on uncooked mushroom all day long.

Thanks for the suggestion, but Number4 is correct: [...] it would be easier and more predictable to just be a racist.

o.o

BRILLIANT

Why did I never think of that? I guess I just saw it as a horrible thing to let plants rot.

Or, you could limit which seasons in which they're grown. I've found it useful in keeping back the raging tsunami of purple mushrooms.

You can use the same thing for any other crop that you grow to prevent them from taking over the stockpiles. You can also vary the size of the crop storage for each type of plant. Generally you don't need all that many plump helmets assuming you're producing them at all times.

This frees up lots of stockpile space and pottery for storing other things that cannot be produced on a regular basis, like meat, roasts, imported plants, gathered plants, and so forth. No sense to let fancy roasts rot because your stockpiles are filled up with plump helmets.

I put finished meals only and drinks only stockpiles above and below my dining room, and forbid them from everywhere else.  That way I can separate my farming area from my eating area without too many long trips for hungry/thirsty dwarves.

In terms of controlling output I tend to make farm plots no larger than 5. By making a room full of these small plots and switching them on or off seasonally you soon get a feel for how much is needed.

If you have a 15 tile plump helmet farm on since embark and you start with a farmer and plump helmets, yeah you're gonna overproduce :D
