Iceland's at it again.

We've got another volcano, folks. Flights are starting to be cancelled over the UK, possibly the rest of europe soon. At least this one's easier to spell.

Yeah, I was disappointed that it was not another Viking tongue-twister. "Grimsvotn"?

Who is Grim, why is he voting, and why would they name a volcano after it?  :P

It means fierce waters. :b
And Viking tongue twister?
What was the name of the other one?
Meanwhile, I love volcanoes.

Might it even be.. "Grim water"? :P

On a side note, I'm rather sad because I used my bad "use magma" joke too early and badly frased. I wish I could have said it now.

Interestingly, that's how Freakazoid started. And no, I don't know why I remember that, nor is it particularly relevant.

Actually, that translation is not exactly correct. Grímsvötn is named after some guy named Grímur, supposedly, although nobody knows who he was. It's not one big mountain either, but rather a large area, 100 kilometers in length and 15 in width. It sits under Vatnajökull, the biggest glacier in Iceland, and it's the most active volcano in the country too, having erupted more than one hundred times since the settlement of Iceland.

Literally, Grímsvötn means Grímur's waters, while Vatnajökull means Water glacier. In both cases, the names refer to the amount of rivers flowing from them, as opposed to "hurr its made outta water".

According to what I've been hearing the eruption is probably calming down now and it'll be over soon enough. The ash might reach Europe, but the wind is being more like it usually is so it's unlikely for this to be Eyjafjallajökull Mk. 2 for anybody but us Icelanders. In fact it'll be worse for us, since this eruption is about ten times bigger than Eyjafjallajökull. But hey, this is small fries compared to Skaftáreldar, and it's in a rural part of the country unlike, say, Heimaey.

There is a non-rural part of Iceland?

Yeah, it's called Reykjavík. That place's suburban.

This is completely anecdotal, but I seem to recall someone mentioning that a larger volcano was supposed to be tied to the eruption of Eyjafjallajokul I think it was Lakagígar, I remember it was supposed to be worse...

...ok I'm being completely useless I'll shut up now.

Also, yeah, seeing it with the diacritics helps.
Gríms isn't grims. :b
And Eyjafjallajökull isn't very tough at all.
All of the sounds are pretty soft.

if you break down eyjafjallajokul into its component words you have a rough translations of "Eyja's Mountain Glacier"

If you have any idea what the sounds are supposed to sound like in the language yeah. Working strictly phonetically from English it's terrible.
