Honestly? I don't know. There's a lot that would need editing regarding leveling, classes, and cutting down the amount of skills... Really, considering the amount of things you would need to change to make it playable would mean by the time you're done it's not even the same game, and that's talking about just the mechanics of it. :-\

1) You cut a a zero off for leveling up and increase the AP so that most jobs should get 5AP per day.
2) Play as trolls or dwarves
3) Cut down on the numbers for the rolls.

That's a start anyway.

Posting to watch, and to see if it is actually possible to make this game playable.

if it is actually possible to make this game playable.
My prediction is that the game will only be slightly playable with forum-fixing. It's 900+ pages.

Do you really want to take on a project that size, dude? It's like 900 pages of crap - more or less literally - to sift through and edit. I mean, if you really want to, I'll help, because friends don't let friends cope with FATAL alone, but my end would mainly be dealing with editing the three things I mentioned above to try to get something close to playable. :-\

Half of it is just descriptions of professions and spells...

The combat system is fine though. I think, I just payed attention to the body hit parts...

Yes, the combat system is fine. That's why you can crit someone in the clitoris with your maul. ¯\(°_o)/¯

Seriously though, making FATAL playable isn't worth it. Being screwed up and broken is basically all the value that FATAL has, and trying to make it at all playable or decent isn't even worth doing. I can understand fixing up a system that is flawed but otherwise has value, but FATAL is screwed up from the start.

In my case I'm just bored half the time, and pretty much have nothing better to do with myself. :-\ Anyway if you do want me to help, I'll just work on the bone-dry mechanics. I'm not good at flavor-text in the slightest.

I just skimmed through the 900something pages. I've come to a realization...
It'd be better to take whatever you like, if anything, and adapt it to a system more sane.
I mean, if it's some elements of character creation, by all means take it.

But it seems to me that anything to do with Fatal is like dumpster diving. You'll look like a Bum no matter what you find. ;)

Experienced RPG players need no flavour text, skip straight to mechanics and options. Minimize words used. Basically delete Hall's entire text and work on tables, rolls etc.

I'm all for helping (maybe we can pick a chapter each, and dredge it for rules, so we individually don't get too fatalled) But really, when you streamline the rules what are we going to replace the gaps with (and the gaps are very large, it doesn't feel like a finished system) ? D&D or Warhammer Fantasy RPG seem to be the closest well-known systems.

"Chivalry and Sorcery" would also fill a lot of gaps, but it's so ancient and rare, I don't even know if a PDF is available. I have a copy of Ars Magica here too, could get some ideas for the magic system.

...

But really, this would be just the same a writing our own whole new RPG. If there's going to be any specific  point to basing it on FATAL, we should try and do FATAL's intended "sexy" rpg but with style, subtlety, and no sexism / racism.

When I think about it, if you remove the racist/sexist stuff that basically cuts out about 150 pages. Stuff pertaining mostly to roman times, such as punishments and such... cut all that out since this is a system core book, not a campaign book like say Eberron or Mystara, and you can cut out 150 pages. Cut all the flavor text for each class down to about four lines, another 50 pages gone. Third of the book, right there. Cut down the size of some of the tables and get rid of some that aren't necessary at all (such as pretty much everything about how your character looks, although we could always leave these as an 'if you're bored and don't want to decide everything about your character, here's some things you can roll' kind of option) and that's a total of half the book cleared off. :3

Then you can replace some of the options with more tried-and-true ones. For example, three varieties of ogre as a PC? Ogres are generally monsters to kill and they can easily be replaced with half-orcs. ^^ Elves as dryads? Kind of interesting, I guess, but you already have dryads. Might as well use standard elves and keep the two separate. Of course, as has been said, by this time we're basically just creating an entirely new system, but still...

Has anyone made a Dwarf Fortress RPG yet?

We could write an app to "import" creature stats from DF raws! Instant creature catalogue.

I wouldn't worry about the races, races can be added once a system is working well. Work on the core mechanics first. And yeah, basically most of FATAL feels like padding.

Hmm, I see. We could use the level of megabeast to easily determine how strong they would be, like a bronze colossus being D:15 and a giant being D:5. Most animals don't have a difficulty I think, but I also imagine most would be D:1. Except for wolves. Those are D:3. :P And I guess Giant Desert Scorpions, those would be at least a D:5.

not to mention the level D:300 Carps and the level D:50 Elephants  :P

butseriously if you cut out the whole racism/sexuality crap and about 3/4 of the spell effects you would save a really bunch of pages...

Oh yeah, forgot about the critical spell failures. How many are there, 10,000? I think so, I'm pretty sure it's in the five digits anyway. Most of those are just rewriting 'change deity,' or are part of the aforementioned racist/sexist stuff. Cut 9,900 of those out, for sure. Even keeping it to just 100 may be too much. :-\
