Heh. I sometimes turn back the clock when one of my units that I got from the story line dies, unless I have other units like it.

Also man, foot pads are pretty awesome. I mean, they are good archers and clubers and stuff (very good vs undead) but they are your basic cheap unit most of the time... Until they level up. Outlaws are the bomb.

Man, trolls are beasts. I just started the first campaign, and even the whelps are kicking ass. They are as strong as a horse man, but anywhere  and with regeneration.
But weak against ranged attacks, and slow, which can cost you. They do have the advantage of doing crush damage, which very few units have resistance to. Frankly, my favorite unit is the orcish archers. They've got that nasty fire attack which works so well. I'd generally go for a mix of 50% archers, then 25% trolls and 25% grunts for my main force. Though naturally wolf riders are good for the fast attack.

Yeah, you are right, I guess the fact that the level I was fighting vs them was basically a plans level, so I had a ton of horse men, and we started close so speed did not really matter might have colored my perceptions

You know what we really need? A steam group for this so we can organize it in real time without any of this missing each other stuff.

Who would be up for that?

Except for the fact that in Wesnoth, 60-70% chance to dodge is in reality way less than that  :P

I will agree that the RNG is 'fair', as much as a piece of script can be. Every time I miss with that orcish assassin or my fencer on the hills gets his ass kicked, there's another time where one of my swordman landed all his hits or my mage dodged superbly in shallow water. It tends to balance, at the end of the day.

The most important rule of Wesnoth is that if you absolutely have to succeed at a roll, it'll fail.  If you can't learn to accept this, you'll ragequit.  Once you accept it, you can learn how to not give the dice a chance to fuck you.

So, all your actions should be Xanatos gambits?

More like Batman Gambits, since you would be trying to avoid failure in the first place.

Batman gambits require that you know exactly what is going to happen, which is impossible because of the RNG.

And a Xanatos Gambit requires you to win even if you "lose".

So it's more like a... Wesnoth Gambit?
