I can't believe you guys are even considering removing friendship from the game.
Although, it should become more balanced once Toady adds magic.

I can't believe you think "friendship" should cause "massive homicide."

Mechanical effects of friendship are irrelevant. Without it, your dwarves would never grow, and their lives would be without meaning.

Honestly, after all those excellent letters you wrote me, I thought you'd have a better understanding of the importance of friendship. Perhaps your studies are not yet complete.

They are manipulated by beings beyond their understanding who oft care little or nothing for them. And truthfully, the main difference between dwarves with and without friends to most of these beings is one is more dangerous.

Hm, have you considered murder?  It's either that or letting it go.

Neither of my suggestions prevent them from making friends.
It just makes them not have sudden urges to strangle kittens and murder everyone if one of their friends happens to die.

Friendship causing murders is not a BUG. It's a FEATURE!

This are alcoholic bi-polar dwarves who balance out their spouse dying with eating a really good meal in a fantastic dining room. Do you really think their social interactions and mental states work on the same level as us?

Also, in the real world this also happens, people lashing out at those around them (Although in RL it's mostly psychological.)

IMO taking the Death-of-friend based tantrums out of dwarves would just be nasty D:

Friendship causing murders is not a BUG. It's a FEATURE!

That doesn't mean it is working as intended.

I can see menacing spikes of iron, but only a true dorf can make menacing spikes of dog leather or pig tail cloth!  What if they suddenly start decorating all their artifacts with like ... like ... butterflies or something.

Oh.  Oh.  Oh Armok I'm so sorry.

I just regret starting DF too late to experience elephants (or the really bugged carp that levelled up by swimming).

(I still lost huge numbers to "normal" 40d carp in one fortress though).

Are there any mods that restore elephants to their original, horrifying glory?

Engraved on the floor is a well-designed image of a kobold and a carp.  The kobold is making a plaintive gesture.  The carp is laughing.
