I learned that while pumps can pull water in through fortifications on the z-level below, they cannot pull it through fortifications on their own z-level. GRRR!!!! And I had to dismantle them on-the-fly, too, as they were the moses-effect drains for my entrance (IN a major river, dug down to 3 levels below normal...)

If you painfully set up a complicated staggered schedule for your military with training, stationing and patrolling along routes, it is NOT Toady's fault that all they do is 'individual combat drill', but your own for putting the schedule on Active/Training alert and not setting the squads on Active/Training alert.

Took me 3 weeks before I figured it out (again).  :P

I've learned that if I dig a channel between a murky pond and the river that flows 2 z-levels below the surface in a gorge it has carved out, my miner can get swept away and down into the river and drown.

The only reason I wanted that channel was to drain the pond so I could recover the corpse of the caravan guard who dodged into it.

Next time I'll make sure there's a vertical grate at the outflow of the channel.

I have learned that a wolf should not be put in the same pasture as goat kids.

Unpossible.  It may not be the only answer, but it is the best answer.

I have learned that magma is not always the answer.
Blasphemy!

I've learned that it's better to lose my only woodcutter than to lose nine military dwarves, a generic craftsdwarf, and every animal in my pasture. (The woodcutter died anyways, the squad didn't arrive to be massacred fast enough)

That underground bushfires can be more deadly than the fire-breathing dinosaur that starts them.

Also: Bridges do not support the construction of floors and attempting to make them do so above a magma-sea is a quick way to jumpstart your legendary mason and engraver's experience as a magmadiver.

Unless you want a veritable mountain of dead stray trained war animals, it is best not to draft your only animal trainer into the army.
Stray trained animals have a tendency to follow the trainer around..into the danger room where they got spiked en masse.

I have learned that magma is not always the answer.

??? Have you tried using more magma?

I have learned that sending a dwarf with no bedroom to dig into a volcano is asking for trouble. "No Urist McSleepypants! Don't lie down in the magma chamber!"

Whenever dwarves get into melee, their first reaction is to place their baby on their head, to allow free use of both hands, and thus any headshot instead strikes the child.

I learned that a civilian CAN punch a goblin ambusher to the face, killing him...

And I also learned that his friends will probably slaughter him soon after.

I learned that if you pit a couple hundred war dogs against a demon law-giver, not only will the Demon survive with the only permanent damage being completely broken sets of fingers and toes, but it will also be transformed into an ungodly avatar of death that not even a modded legendary swordsman with [SPEED:0] can take down.

I also learned that dwarves put into a coma after being beaten half to death with an <<*Elf Bone Earring*>> can last indefinitely without food or water and that an ungodly demon avatar of death is happy to ineffectually hammer on said dwarves' iron helms with its copper slicing knife until the vengeful ghosts of their fallen comrades scare them all to death.

I learned how the plump helmet spawn gets inside the cage trap (wich is very annoying).
It's because of the food the animal trainer uses when training a caged animal, the beast will leave the seeds in its cage if a plant food was used.

I always wondered how in armoks name I caught a plump helmet spawn.
