As the title says, I can no longer play my beautiful, 12-years on fort: the game crashes whenever I attempt to save.

Is there anything I can do? Savescumming is out of question, as the only one I had got overwritten while I was messing around with my kindergarten, and the rest is too old.

I think this is less a problem and more an expression of dwarven priorities.

The only things I can think of are

1. DF Hack - try deleting huge chunks of objects with the new utilities.

2. Runesmith editing ? Haven't used this but it sounds good

3. Does seasonal autosave work where manual save doesn't? Maybe worth a shot at least.

4. Try erase things like noble positions, squads etc. Maybe there's a bug there.

5. Abandon Fortress, see if this works (maybe after a big item clean-up). You can then reclaim, be like a new game but with the 12 year old fortress.

6. Use DFMode to switch to Adventurer mode from inside the game, this allows a whole bunch of tricks (including keeping your dwarves after abandoning a fort). I haven't used it myself because Adventurer mode is too CPU hungry for my system.

Sorry, none of these things will probably work, but who knows.

Thanks. I ended up finding a save old of four days in the bin. I had not built my copper road, my execution chamber, had not built half the steel armors, had not re-organised the whole stockpiles of my fort and a lot of other things, which sucks.

Better than nothing, I guess. Still, I am so pissed and I have only myself to blame for this.

You really should put seasonal autosave on if you haven't, it's a lot quicker than manual save, and creates separate named backups. You lose 3 months game time at max that way.

I used to do, but it did not create seasonal ones. Are you perhaps confusing autobackup with autosave?

Nope, autosave names them stuff like region1-spr-31 etc for spring of year 31. So each season is saved separately, hence they're backed up (not overwritten by the main save).
