Like something out of a horror movie
« on: May 20, 2011, 05:53:58 pm »

tl;dr at the bottom.

An aging, crippled veteran(Ability to stand lost) gets possessed and drags himself out of the hospital. Slow going, because he's crawling around on his belly. He claims the adamantine extraction workshop in the basement and heads down into the vein, looking for only Armok knows what.

He crawls to the egress level, where there's a hallway and airlock to the caverns, and just sits there. Whether he's slowed down due to exhaustion, or dehydration, or pathing issues is unknown. The point is, he crawls down there and is forgotten for about a season.

Out of boredom, I'd stationed the militia down there a few seasons ago and sent them out to slaughter crundles and elk birds. Dwarves being dwarves, and the equipment system being what it is, the end of the hall where they had been stationed is strewn with abandoned clothes and armor and half-empty barrels of booze. No one had been down there in some time. Until now.

Urist McThirsty senses unclaimed booze in the egress tunnel. Instead of going to the stockpile on the farm level, the stockpile in the tomb that's supposed to be for the workers clearing the stone there, or even the main stockpile on the top floor, he heads down the the same level Urist McPossessed is crawling around in. He steps into the egress hallway, totally ignoring the dwarf scribbling lovecraftian glyphs in the stone and babbling in eldritch tongues. At the entrance to the airlock, he finds his prize: A barrel of whip wine.

Being a dwarf, he drinks it. He spends a few ingame days down there, just drinking that whip wine.

Meanwhile, McPossessed comes to his senses long enough to notice this dwarf walking by him and ignoring and his need for materials. A vein throbs in his head. He snaps. They all need to die. All of them. Sure enough, his trusty ≡adamantine short sword≡ is where it has always been. He draws it, and the entire world turns red.

McThirsty, having sated his need for alcohol, decides to be a responsible dwarf and bring the barrel back to one of the more accessible stockpiles. He begins to head back upstairs

Urist McThirsty cancels store item in stockpile: Interrupted by Urist McCrippledAndBerserking

Epilogue: McThirsty was slain after being cornered by McCripple. McCripple, unable or unwilling to go back up the vein, is promptly oneshotted by the current militia and his body thrown committed to the magma. His equipment has yet to be retrieved.

tl;dr: A dwarf walked by a crippled, possessed, ex-military champion dwarf to get a drink from the end of an empty, abondoned hallway. When he went back by him, McCripple had gone berserk, and gutted him.

You crazy bastard, you threw a ≡adamantine short sword≡ in the magma?!? Yes, I know it's magma-safe, but how are you going to get it back?!?

Ever played adventure mode with an axe? That's a horror movie. I've gone to a fortress and chopped off everyone of a noble's fingers, then his hands, then his forearm, then the rest. Repeated for legs. All infront of his child who was hopelessly hitting me whilst enraged by it.

I love being an ax murderer.

Did you remember to throw parts of the noble's body at the child, then throw HIS body parts at the other dorfs?

When he died, he dropped everything, as creatures are wont to do. Only the fleshy bits were thrown in the magma, to prevent miasma. His gear is still lying in a pool of blood in the egress hallway.

Ah, by "his equipment has yet to been retrieved", I thought you meant you had thrown it in magma, too. That's a relief.

It was a human noble, but yes. Yes I did. I killed all the other humans in the castle with blue bloods.

More Dwarven Horror Stories

My latest and currently under reclaim Fortress fell because of one mal-adjusted dwarf... the one they know as BRIGAND...

One of the founding 7, my miner, the strong and hardy, Kivish Ostatheral, had shot to legendary status carving the vast winding labrinth which protected The Fortunate Hatchet. Retiring from manual labor, she entered the military and shot to fame for slaying several goblin thieves. But she wasn't happy with the way the fortress was run. The grand dining hall was constantly put on hold while the miners calved a huge hole to the caverns below, the individual apartments were carved out at a rate of one per month, and she, not holding a noble position was low on the waiting list. She had lost a spouse to drowning a dog to crushing and an infant to her own blind negligence. But damn was she a hell of a soldier.

(the is were my game got weird and buggy)
The powers that be dictated that the forces of the fortress had too little practice, and an annoying liasion to the mountain homes was chosen for target practise. Kivish attacked the liason and the liason ran, past a group of plant gatherers. Kivish snapped. She dove on the murdered him and the rest of the group with her mace
(I have no idea what happened here... my theory is that attacking the liason turned her into an enemy of the civ, because all my animals turned on my dwarves at this point, even owners being mauled by their pets)

She dropped the mace and gained a name:- Kivish Ostatheral Kironbogsosh Degel 'The Brigand of Armors'. She wandered through the halls as the frantic fortress recovered from the murders. Covered in blood she scared everyone away from their jobs (urist cancels carve: interupted by  Kivish Ostatheral Kironbogsosh Degel). All around her animals savaged owners and the rampant puppy population suicidally attacked fully grown dwarves.

Kivish watched her friends murdered by puppies and snapped completely this time ( Kivish Ostatheral Kironbogsosh Degel has gone beserk!) She stood in the grand statued hall to the incomplete dining room and with pick in hand started murdering anyone who crossed her. She felled 15 dwarves before they locked the doors, and abandoned hopes of accessing the food stockpiles which lay beyond her.

After several months, the survivers had fallen from a fortress of 60-70 to around 5. Tantrums, and the fact that all the animals in the fortress had turned hostile had taken its toll. Most of the doors of the fortress were locked to stop murderous animals from killing the survivors. With little choice but to fight or starve, the remaining dwarves formed a squat and slowly began the decent to the main hall...  (I had to airlock most of the fortress. To get down 4 floors I had to take a crazy route through my stacked stockpiles and workshops, opening doors then quickly closing them to stop too many killer animals from attacking my dwarves)

By the time they reached the final door, only 3 remained, a peasant and two craftsdwarves, with pieced together armor and training weapons (the best I could manage...). They kicked down the door and charged. Immediately one of the craftsdwarves fell. Kivish swung her pick into his chest and he fell on the spot. But the dwarf had made a nobel sacrifice as the pick had lodged in his gut and disarmed The Brigand. The second craftsdwarf was set upon, as Kivish strangled him so hard it tore great gashed in his neck. However the Brigand was weakened from months without food or water. The Peasant kept stabbing Kivish with his wooden spear until finally she fell. The craftsdwarf slowly bled to death on the floor besides The Brigand, and the peasant couldn't help him (Peasant cancels recover wounded, interupted by stray puppy (tame))

Finally with the Brigand dead, the Peasant could eat. Opening the last door to the food stockpile, he laughed, because, hey, him being ripped to death by puppies waiting on the other side was a pretty funny way to go.

I had something similar without a loyalty cascade.  A particularly horrible forgotten beast (shale lobster with deadly dust) came while I was dealing with an accidental flood in a vertical fortress (for those of you who don't run vertical forts, a flood generally means that whatever levels are below the flood point, are now historical, rather than actual parts of the fortress).  I managed to get something like 50 survivors to the top levels and seal them away from the raging forgotten beast.  Then a single soldier went mad.  He killed something like 27 before the mob pulled him down.  He chopped a head with every slice.  He was all that was left of the militia anyway.  There was no hope.

All my fortresses run on vertical based things... The amount of ex-main stair cases and moats and shafts make it pretty crowded sometimes. I run an air lock system on everything though, every coridoor has a 3x3 crossroads at the end with 4 doors to lock, and all workshops have their own room and hatch. Floods are usually contained loosing only a few walkways and workshops. And later I like to flood my dining halls from high z levels to get some happy thoughts.

Oh god, I have a sequel on my hands... BRIGAND 2: GHOST BRIGAND

Just looked down to see my cheesemaker had his leg severed. Completely clean, no blood, just knocked out, missing a leg. Look back through the announcements...

'Kivish Ostatheral Kironbogsosh Degel, Ghostly Miner batters Zan Regosed, Cheesemaker'

My ghost population from before the reclaim is getting quite fun actually... Kivish is a violent ghost who beats people, but I've got a gem crafter ghost who keeps stealing things and a hunter ghost who has scared two people to death.

Out of boredom, I made a million-dollar dwarf(one that the medical system had actually worked for, held together by splints, stitches, and cloth) a militia captain of a one-man squad. When he went to pick out equipment, he immediately homed in on McCripple's old sword despite other blue weapons of similar quality being closer and not covered in the blood of an innocent dorf.

Weird.

So now I've got a heavily-scarred, heavily-bandaged dorf walking around with this guy's old sword. I'm not sure what to think.

I once did the almost-same thing, except with a wrestler. Tearing all the little pieces off one by one... Fingers... Toes... Teeth... Ears... Nose...

Then tore his throat to shreds.

Quick! The sword is cursed! Throw it in the mag- BUILD A SHRINE FOR IT!! Make all your military commanders use it till they inevitably go mad!

Dwarf Fortress: You have a team of hundreds working for four years to make a game where you save the world again. We have one guy for four years make a near-infinite world generator, write the physics, generate histories, form detailed descriptions of every human, elf, dwarf, and goblin generated, caverns, and huge randomly generated monsters made out of who knows what. You. guys. suck.
