The internet pisses me off sometimes.
« on: May 20, 2011, 03:07:45 pm »

To wit: I get really pissed off by the existence of semi-scam ads.
Basically, some idiot installed a program on the school computers that advertises ♥ Singles Chat (for Free) ♥ in the browser. I was tempted to figure out how to troll the hell out of it.

Apparently by clicking "go" I confirm that not only am I 18 years of age, but that I'm not married nor am I a criminal, which is sketchy. On the other hand, I can tell it that I'm a 62-year-old man from Armenia, so who's to say otherwise?

After going through the survey questions to see what exactly they were pulling: oh, hey, look, it costs money. They want your credit card number for your free trial. Before you do that, you can say all sorts of things about yourself. If I had gone though with it, their database would be scratching its head trying to match a 54-year-old Albanian man who wants a Pacific Islander woman who speaks "African languages" (yes, that was a choice.) Moreover, giving it your credit card number is the only way to engage in "chat" with "singles" (and I'm not stupid enough to give it the number, but I do want to know what trick they're pulling with that.)

So basically, there are parts of the Internet that I don't like. I'm fine with the existence of 4chan or pornhub. It's this sleazy, half-adware crap that I detest.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Scams on the internet piss me off, too.

But the really, really obvious ones are just hilarious. I shit you not, I once saw an ad saying "Scientists have discovered a simple household product that can cause eternal youth! Click here for more information"

The internet pisses me off too... Though in my case its only trojans, viruses, spyware, ect that enrage me most the time. Wikia websites have been pissing me off lately since they get ads from time to time that try to infect you. The bastards.

One of the facets that ticks me off most is ad-loaded versions of free programs.  If you don't have Adobe Reader or Flash or whatever, and you just do a Google search for the name and click on any of the first five results, you're almost certain to get some "PC Helper" site that will provide you with an installer for the freely available program... which includes a half-dozen third-party toolbars and widgits and shit.  There's an entire industry of websites that exist only to Google-bomb themselves to the top of the search results, and get computer-illiterate people to legally load their computer up with adware.  Then I have to come in and fix my parents' computer again because they just cannot grasp the concept of not installing every single program a popup window tells them to.

Even the official adobe reader installer is loaded with adware and bloatware. By default it installs mcafee, unless you uncheck the opt-out checkbox that's over in the top right corner of the download page. That pissed me off tremendously the one time I fell for it.

Now I'm using FoxIt which is a better pdf reader, but the installer is just as loaded with adsearchbars and the like. No Ask.com, I do not want your shitty toolbar.

I don't normally get pissed off by the internet but what really grinds my gears (hehe) is those full-screen, highly-believable-to-the-technically-inept ads that tell you you've got viruses, and it's scanning for them--Oh look, flashing things!--but wait, click here and you can remove all of these viruses for FREE! And then if you don't have an ad blocker or a decent antivirus (I've seen some of these get past Avast and Norton, AVG not in my experience but who knows) it will download a virus that poses as an antivirus straight to your computer (through vulnerabilities in Windows? I don't know). And the longer it sits there the more screwed up your computer gets.

I'd vouch that as many as 10% of computers I've had to "fix" because they were "broken" were really just technically inept people falling into the grubby little claws of these awful fake antiviruses.

The worst ads imo are those loud obnoxious ones. Scamware can be ignored, but those... urgh.

The ads that really tick me off are the half-assed scam mail you get in your email for game accounts and such. Seriously there are so many mistakes in their words that It would be obvious to anyone but the stupidest of Computer users.
You know what? Fuggit, I like scam ads. This is social Darwinism at work, people!

Just the other day I had an email sent to me that wanted WoW account information, which I don't have since I don't even have an account lol.

It's great for when you run around naked. Prevents streaking.

@FreeForm: That was what killed a perfectly good 10-year old machine I had. One of those bastards got on the family computer (thanks ma), and there was no way to remove it, and it destroyed it. I had to find all sorts of ways to bypass it so we could retrieve all the lost data, but that was after killing the virus/trojan first to be safe (a good year or 2 afterward).

Funny enough, I also get facebook and Myspace ads that I have some friend requests or something along those lines. Funny thing, I don't have ANY social networking accounts since at least 2 years ago. And even so, knowing my accounts may stick around still after deleting them, I wised up and went nuts and changed the ID completely before hitting the "delete account" button, just in case there were any cache hunters.

I wouldn't mind the whole social darwinism aspect of it if I wasn't the one who has to fix the computer :<

I like the Nigerian email scams, you can get some great replys from these guys.  However im very fucking pissy about the fact that I have an email address that is being bombarded with scams.  The problem? I only use it for sending out resumes.  So either one of the jobs ive applied for is a scam, or one of the people I have applied to have sold my email addr to a scammer.

The other issue is:  I am applying for jobs cause I dont have one, ergo I DONT HAVE ANY FARKING MONEY!!  WHAT DO THESE IDIOTS THINK THEY CAN GET OUT OF ME?

We had a guy come into our store to check if his computer had anything bad on it - Apparently someone called him from "Microsoft", saying that they'd detected a number of viruses on his computer and wanted to take control of it to make sure, just follow these directions... So he let him.

I kind of felt bad for the guy, but he wised up quickly enough to notice something was fishy and didn't install the anti-virus the caller wanted him to buy.  We didn't find anything on the computer with our scans, but that doesn't mean something isn't hiding in there.

Which just goes to show that some of these internet scam artists are either extremely good or laughingly incompetent.  I'm not sure which, but I'm sure the competent ones have real jobs and don't need to scam to make a living.
