I DONT KNOW WHETHER TO BE ANGRY OR SCARED

Anyway, keep the potter dude around.  It's easier than killing him now and he'll be useful later.  Eventually you're going to have access to magma, and even if you don't it's not like it's the only solution.  You don't even have to waste precious coal on clay instead of metal.  Remember, you also have the option of clear-cutting the forest and turning it into fuel.  You might wanna wait until you have enough beds though.

Masterwork terracotta army FTW

Yeah, and half of them will be mussels or gods depicted as GCS or something.

That's pretty useful...masterwork clay crafts are pretty valuable, especially if glazed, and you don't have to do anything more than designated a collection area to get the raw material.  It could be worse, it could have been a legendary fish dissector or milker.

Of course, that assumes you have clay.

Fire clay AND kaolinite...but I don't wanna waste my lignite.
Use magma.

Well, it's down to playstyle. I get my magma going within a fortnight of embark - by autumn of first year I've got my migrant waves to make use of it properly but it's all set up and waiting for them to arrive.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Legendary potters are awesome--he can make clay for a perimeter wall faster than you can mine and without the fps issues or clutter, he can make lovely expensive things out of nothing (with magma) or with trees and a wood furnace.  How can people hate on pottery as though it were cheese, or god-forbid legendary potash making.

Edit: Oh and clay pots, which are one over rock pots in that they consume nothing at a magma kiln while effectively working as barrels.

Agreed. Pottery is actually pretty good if you have a magma kiln.

Kaolinite and fire clay use fuel, don't they?

Nope.

But stoneworking beats pottery.

So if I make porcelain goods, that means "free legendary-made shit"?

Sweet.

yeah fire clay and kaolinite both yield pots that dont need to be glazed....as well as being worth just plain more.

As said pottery is awesome.  Once you have magma its about as easy as it gets.  Sure it needs a collection job but thats assignable through the manager now (and you can use a second kiln to only queue collection for smoothness) and worth twice as much as stone crafts

Keep him and start digging for magma. You'll have the added bonus of using any lazy dwarfs idling around your fort as miners if you're willing to make/buy some cheap picks for them.
