I heard it was going to have a 3d graphics mode where you can possess in game characters ala dungeon keeper but everything will still be ASCII.  And you can swing your axe and chop off the dots on i's and stuff.  cooool.

Seriously, will the new version be playable without a huge time investment? I get bored waiting out the first winter.

As far as I understand Toady lizensed the Unreal 3 Engine for the visuals and it will have a complete mouse controlled GUI.

.. Not

I think it will be a while before the release, and 3d is not the right way to describe it.. he just adds a z axis - more levels.

Speaking honestly and not tongue-in-cheek, I have to say that I've always wanted to play a 3D roguelike with 3D ASCII characters for quite some time now.  Walls would be cubes with "#"-shaped textures, food would be little lumps shaped like "%" signs, etc.

The burden is, of course, getting someone with the development time, the wherewithal, and the skills...

So do i, but if you dont want to wait it out, you could always try to place your fort close to another Dwarf Fortress, and get a wave of immigrants that arrive BEFORE winter sets in. Thus, you'll have something to do other then looking at blinking dwarf faces all winter.  ;)

You must have the attention span of a dwarven rum-fueled miner! How can you not enjoy watching your bearded citizens work through the cold and sleet? Braving the depths of the mountain?!

Because im the sort of player that likes to build a nice little hole in the wall and then send my dwarven horde against elephants and demons to see who survives to be worthy of my fortress... and seven does not make a horde.

I haven't changed anything about the start conditions.  Once armies go in, there might be more of a push toward allowing more variety in the start conditions.  I'll need something like that to test it, probably, anyway.

there was once an open gl frontend for nethack that did something like this.  support fell through, and i dont think its available anywhere anymore.

but yeah, i've always wanted something like that since i saw the 3d marquee screensaver on NT4.0  -- it had fully rendered 3d open GL text, and i always hoped something like that would be designed for a roguelike.

A few years back I used pagemaker to design some t-shirt art of a 3-d @ wielding a sword and shield and fending off a larger & sign.  it was one of those programs where you could apply effects to characters and curve them slightly, so the @ was puffing its self out, and the & was recoiling.  I never made the shirt, though.

Actually, I don't think you have to vary the start conditions too much.  The players could do it.  We could have savegames with different conditions made by players. Such as... "Here is a dwarven army ready to invade the goblin mines", "Here is a nice working fortress" or "Here is a big fortress but you have 5 dwarves left, the lower floors are flooded and a siege is on its way. GOOD LUCK!"
So maybe if there is a way to restart the calenders on them we could make our own scenarios.

You need to run tower-1.0-***.jar in /lib subdirectory. Do you even have Java installed?
