Dwarves walk on ice, then it melts and they drown

One of the following two things should probably be implemented.

1) Dwarves should never walk on ice unless absolutely necessary.

2) We need an order which will allow our dwarves to not walk on frozen ponds/rivers/etc, as when spring comes they aren't smart enough to stay off and they drown when it melts.

I'm going to go attempt to path everything with restricted, but it would be nice to have an

  • rder for it. We'll see if pathing works.

Thanks for the awesome game, Toady.

I agree, it sounds like a good idea to have the option of ordering them to avoid ice whenever possible. I had a related problem, but I did admittedly have more time to avert it.

It was Winter. I had a frozen moat, two squares wide, with a 3x2 path of six floor tiles crossing it. I decided to deconstruct these floor tiles it and replace them with a regular 'bridge', and had six helpful dwarves all working on it at once.

The old bridge had been removed, six stones now in its place. I'm not certain what was going through the dwarves' heads, but they then all decided to sleep in the six squares where the bridge was being built, instead of retiring to their bedrooms. They all stayed asleep until the season passed and the ice melted, causing the game to spam me with half a dozen 'x cancels Sleep: Dangerous Terrain' messages. Finding them all submerged, I tried digging ramps to quickly get them out, but unsurpisingly, I ended up with six dead dwarves in my moat.

It wasn't a debilitating loss, as I had many other dwarves by then. To be honest, I kind of felt it served them right for being stupid enough to sleep on the ice.

It would be incredibly useful if the ice, just before it melts, got turned into weak ice. That way dwarves would know to clear the area before itīs too late.

An option for automatic would be best, it would also be cool to have some way to check the temperature and an announcement for when the thaw (or freeze) is close.

Lakes should probably be lined with upward ramps.  Currently, they are very much pits of doooooooom.  Maybe not totally lined in case upward ramps interfere with fishing/drinking.
