I don't know what started it, but for some reason my dogs and cats are attacking my dwarves. Now my dwarves are running in circles while animals attack them. This all happened after my gem cutter killed two dwarves for no reason at all. Anyone have a reason as to why this is happening?The gem cutter has expressed pleasure in slaughter recently, but I can't tell if he is insane or not, although, the animals have seemed to target him the most.
Edit: I guess it wasn't just that. All my dwarves were thirsty, and they started to hurt each other. Even with a still, I guess I didn't make enough alcohol.

Looks like you had some !!FUN!!  dwarves that are very unhappy might sometimes lose their cool and attack their fellow dwarves, sometimes resulting in death. Tame animals occasionally attack dwarves and other animals when the area they live in is too crowded, but it doesn't sound like this is your problem?

Did you pen them all in a small pasture?  That'll make em all very angry.

Have two brewers. The drinks can be cooked back into food later if needed.

Nope, I made it pretty large, and I left the dogs and cats out of it.

Animals that aren't assigned to pen/pasture zones will tend to hang out in meeting areas - how big are your dining halls?

They are usually 20x20. This one was slightly smaller. I think that the dwarves were going a bit mad, and then they started to attack everything.

The tame black bear and and wardog I chained at the entrance to my fort as an anti thief mechanism have been fighting eachother for atleast 2 years now and so far the only injury is the bear has a dented head. If only they leveled up combat skills they would both be legendary by now.

Also my yaks were constantly fighting when I had too many for a pen and almost all the grass was eaten (I like to think of this as competition for food) As a result I have a couple of crippled pets and yaks, but I honestly don't care. It seems tame animals will start fighting things nearby when they are kept in confined spaces, though I've yet to have one attack a dwarf.

Give them separate, tiny "pastures" or something. Or, if you want them to keep fighting, add [CAN_LEARN] to their raws so they level up skills.

My animals attack dwarves and other animals. Sometimes it results in death (of animal) but it's really rare. One or less per year. Usually to kill another animal they need to damage its lungs or got lucky with kick to head. I don't have any gate to my fort so I rely on animals and traps to detect intruders and to delay attackers. I had a situation when a watchdog chained on one side of entry mauled a gobbler chained on other side so badly the poor bird bled to death, or an ewe killed a ram by fracturing his skull. I switched to wardogs near entry, and all other animals are separated.

Attacking  can be prevented by making wider staircases, corridors, meeting areas and of course by pasturing non-pets on sufficiently big pastures. Actually, pets can be pastured too, but I pasture only pets of military. I'm not sure pastured animals will make their owners happy, no chance for interaction. Also most small grazing pets (like pigs or lambs) can eat enough by just hanging around, so they don't need to be pastured. Unless there's absolutely no muddied rock or soil in areas of activity, and hence no grass.
