What is your favorite mode?
« on: May 18, 2011, 06:11:44 pm »

Since 31.17, I have been playing Adventure Mode and Dwarf Fortress equally. I didn't include Legends Mode because it isn't really playable. Adventure Mode have been receiving a lot of love lately, and though Fortress Mode was fixed in this year since 31.01 it is still mostly the same.

So, what is your favorite mode?

Fortress and adventure are equally as good.

So that's 15 on a 10 scale for the both of them.

Legends mode should be included. Just because you don't consider what it does to be comparable doesn't mean there can't be people who nonetheless prefer it. It is more of a core mode than Arena is.

For my own self, I spend the most time with fortresses but am more excited for the future of Adventure mode. I don't spend much time with legends, and I don't think I've used the arena at all besides checking out how it works when it was first added.

I used to play fortress mode a lot more, but since the night creatures I've messed with adventure mode about as often. I can't wait until adventure mode is more fleshed out though. Some of the dev goals just floor me.

Legends Mode is more of a support mode for those playing the other modes. It can't be played, it can only be read. I don't think it qualify as a playable mode. And there is plenty of fun to be had with Arena Mode.

Adventure mode is 'lighter', fortress is more Fun. Depends on the mood.

Right now I'm playing Adventure mode mostly. New DF's combat is massively fun, the kind of game I've always wanted to make. Fortress mode is great too, but too much micromanagement, and too addictive.

With me it's DFmode.
Which allows me to flip between all modes.
Through I mostly use DFmode-Fort mode for building supplies constructions and DFmode-Adventure mode for everything else.
DFmode-arena mode causes Everyone to hate each other and turns the game into deathmatch.

Every mode is a support mode for other modes. Adventure is for interacting with fallen fortresses, and the arena is for testing things modded in for other modes. Some people use Legends very heavily. You're essentially excluding it because of the way you use it personally, which should not be assumed to be universal.

this I use legends for keeping tabs on companions I left behind to see if their still alive.

Legends mode isn't particularly functional, as it really needs some sort of linking potential where, when you are looking up Urist McDeadDwarf getting eaten by the lumbering troll Oggog Magog, you can then go straight to Oggog's page to make things possible to read.

Using the XML dump and a utility like Legends Viewer makes Legends Mode much more entertaining and teaches you much more about what actually happened in the game just by making the information more accessible.

I don't play Adventure mode at all right now.

Until Adventure Mode gets the ability to let you do things besides just mindlessly kill whatever, I won't play it.  Adventure Mode just doesn't have anything interesting in it yet.  I'll consider playing when we get the dynamic cities with citizens who have daily routines they follow, just so that I can watch the simulation.  I'm really hoping for something where those simulated lives are actually interactive to your actions as a player before I get serious about playing Adventure Mode, though.

Fortress Mode, meanwhile, remains fun mostly for its engineering potential.  The game is really much more fun when you largely ignore the boring military parts, and go for elaborate mechanical solutions to your problems.

Adventure Mode can be really fun when you are ambushed by a large goblin patrol while having your own little army. Fighting against a minotaur can be really climatic too. But there is no doubt there is nothing to do beyond fighting.

In fortress mode I really like to see the little stories unfold. It is the biggest apeal to me.

I wouldn't be so annoyed with combat in DF if it were deeper, though.  In Fortress Mode, you pretty much just unleash your military, and then mop up the mess afterwards.  In Adventure Mode, you only have real control over yourself, and still pretty much go with Attack Attack Attack as your strategy.

Compare to games like Hammer and Sickle, a Russian-developed X-Com style of game.  In that, I might do something like see an enemy ambush up ahead, and decide to get the drop on them first by climbing in the window of one of the houses stealthily, and killing the soldiers in there, before using my main character, a sniper, to start picking off the enemy snipers before they can shoot him by taking advantage of a high stealth rating.  Then, the enemy AI, figuring out something is up will send in their sweeper squad, but will stop because they detect my two allies that I posted at the top of the stairs, assault rifles ready to hose down the first people who climb up the stairs of the building I'm in.  In a bit of a standoff, I decide to C4 the floor (destructable environments) above the sweeper squad, then chuck hand grenades into the hole I just created to finish off my dazed enemies.  Meanwhile, my main character sniper is picking off the guards running to check out the explosion.  But then, the enemy commander decides enough's enough, and gets his guards to start lobbing explosives at my building instead of trying to fight me with guns.  That's combat that makes me stop and get paranoid about how best to proceed.

What the game really needs is more meaningful options about how to proceed in combat, and much better AI in general.  (Meaningful as in avoiding "you have three hundred options, but this one is always better than all the others".)  That means that having poison gas vials only becomes truly cool when the enemies start throwing them at you unexpectedly, and you have to react to an unexpected change in enemy tactics.

Hopefully, this will change somewhat with the coming of the martial styles, but I'm not sure.

If dying is Fun then I certaily have more Fun in adventure mode than fortress mode.  I usually quit fort mode due to short attention span.  Ive only played arena mode a little and it seems kinda repetitive to play. I do adv mode a lot, but usually die quickly now that I dont play demigod.

And I personally prefer legends mode since its the easiest way to get stories out for me. so much exciting stuff if your willing to search through all the starvation
