Big red Mortal wound is blinking... Oh, crap. That's been a nice adventurer, done many interesting things.
I do Shift + Z and adventurer goes asleep, hoping for nothing.

But sleeping heals, and my adventurer wakes up completely healthy. Congratulations with a second birthday! Very impressive =)

I had a bruised heart earlier today.
It didn't kill me, despite my wandering through several mountain ranges with the "Mortal Wound" thing blinking. I don't think a bruised heart is actually fatal. It's only bruised.

OK, so the Mortal Wound tag is inaccurate, so no sleeping would be needed. Heard that  it's impossible to travel/sleep when heavy bleeding, so my trick wouldn't work in case of more severe heart damage.

Bruised heart is not a mortal wound, as is a single bruised lung (two however, that's a different story). Getting disemboweled is also a mortal wound but it doesn't count it as so. Like others have said the mortal wound tag is inaccurate.
