Pregenerated Worlds question
« on: February 20, 2008, 04:09:00 pm »

Hi!

Reading how people are facing problems with the increased specs of DF, I was wondering if this would lead to a greater demand for pre-generated worlds.

Do people feel comfortable with the current selection, or do people want to have a greater selection?

And do people insist on getting site recommendations, or do they simply want a world that they can figure out themselves?

The thing is, I am not that good at finding interesting sites or figuring out what people want (I am somewhere between newbie and serious in many regards, I guess (^_^;; ), so I do not really think I could select some "interesting area" for people (I simply look for a square with at least one river tile, one forest tile and one mountain tile - preferably not terrifying or otherwise extreme). However, I do not mind the time it takes to generate a world on my computer, so I could create some worlds for upload. But I don't really think I could guarantee that there would be interesting areas (however you define them), much less describe them as have the people who posted their information on the Wiki.

Thus, I am asking whether such pre-generated, uncommented worlds would be considered useful or if people think it is not worth the bother.

Well, if you have a hosting site with some bandwidth you'd like to utilize, I could see generating four or five random worlds per new version (going back to maybe 33g at earliest) and linking them on the DF wiki.  That way, players with slow machines just have a selection of up-to-date worlds to pick from.  They don't necessarily need to be anything special; players with slow machines are just happy to have a world to use without going through generation.

Unfortunately, I can't use something like that.  Since I'm doing a lot of modding, I need to generate each world myself.  And even "native" DF has a few things which I'd rather modify than play with as-is.

Hi!

Mmmmhhhh, I am not really sure what to do.

I do not have a host of my own, but I figured, if there was a genuine interest in the community for such uploads, it would be alright to borrow some space over at the DFFD.

Figuring that giving more information might be helpful, I have uploaded the world maps of the regions I could currently upload at the maps archive:

Seed 13
Seed 255
Seed 256
Seed 65535
Seed 65536

As I said, I can always make new maps, so requests are possible.

There'll definitely be demand for this. You'd probably just need to list the limitations and shortcomings of using a pregenerated world so the users don't get disillusioned.

But you don't just want to focus on nice, easy places.

Try to get some challenging locales in as well.

And if you need help, just use the Dwarf Foreman utility to scour the area.

Certainly, they're welcome.

Hi!

Okay, I will try to do at least a little bit of prospecting.

There is just one more thing that came to mind. Looking at the map archive, it seems to me that points of interest can be added by anyone, not only the original uploader. If that is the case, I think using the map archive would be a good way to encourage people to share the interesting sites they have found.

Of course, it is different from the display in the game when you select your site,  but it should still give a general direction.

The thing is, I saw the worlds shown in the wiki, and each of them has listed just a single location. But odds are that there are many, many interesting locales on each, also depending on how you define interesting. Thus, I think it would be interesting if more than just one site could be listed with each region, and I think the map archive's point of interest feature could just be the tool for that.

Currently, I have started an experimental fortress in a normal area (2x2) which does not have any neighbors except for dwarves, even though it is continental.

Anyhow, it will take a little while because I will try to do at least a little bit of scouting first (I had hoped for greater interest so that chances would have been high for others to experiment with the worlds, removing the necessity of my prospecting).

Hi!

I have just uploaded the first pregenerated world to the file depot.

The file itself can be found here.

It is seed 69 and you can find the world map at the map archive here.

I have not done any metal prospecting, but I have looked around for noteworthy locations and added some points of interest.

For instance, within a relatively normal region (calm or wilds, I think) without any nearby civilizations, there is a huge terrifying freshwater lake. Besides some forested islands (are islands always flat?), there is also an isolated continental region without humans or elves.

I hope that people find this world useful, and if they find a location they liked for whatever reasons, that they share the information as a point of interest in the map archive.

Hi!

I have just uploaded a pregenerated world created under 38b. While I know that decreasing world size can help people do faster world generation, I figured, there may still be people interested in pregenerated 257x257 worlds.

This I present seed 123456 (257x257 sized), Tar Mudung, The Land of Portent. It offers a lot of contrast between local terrifying places neighboring mirthful or serene ones as well as some nice large islands.

Besides pointing out the rather odd challenge location, I have also noted the location where I have started my own 2x2 fortress - at cliffs and a brook on an island in a really huge fresh water lake (several tiles on the region map!). I think that this is a relatively easy location and thus something for those not interested in experiencing the more terrifying regions.

The file (directory 'region301') is here.

As before, I uploaded the map at the map archive and if you find other interesting locations, please add points of interest to it in order to share them. The map can be found here.

Don't worry, I can take a hint. If there really is no interest in these maps, I will stop uploading them so as not to waste space at the DFFD.

Anyhow, I hope this map helps people have some fun.
