Games Now Considered for NEA Grants, DF Is Perfect!
« on: May 18, 2011, 09:06:40 am »

Not sure if this has went around the forums yet; I ran a quick search and didn't see it.

The National Endowment for the Arts is now considering video games for funding. They must be free (check) and demonstrate a public good (check, as this simulation inspires critical thinking, imaginative narrative, an on an on).

Toady needs to go for this kind of funding. It seems perfect for Indy Games, and I can't think of many that would fit the requirements as perfectly as DF does.

This kind of recognition would be perfect for all of T's hard work, and it would open the game up to 1,000's of curious people.

Unfortunately it looks like it would take some prepatory organizational legwork, at the very least:

Can I apply for a grant as an individual?
No. We only offer grants to nonprofit, tax-exempt 501c3, U.S. organizations; units of state or local government; or federally recognized tribal communities or tribes.

A 501c3 in turn must be operated exclusively for the purpose of "charitable, religious, educational, scientific, literary, testing for public safety, fostering national or international amateur sports competition, and preventing cruelty to children or animals.  The term charitable is used in its generally accepted legal sense and includes relief of the poor, the distressed, or the underprivileged; advancement of religion; advancement of education or science; erecting or maintaining public buildings, monuments, or works; lessening the burdens of government; lessening neighborhood tensions; eliminating prejudice and discrimination; defending human and civil rights secured by law; and combating community deterioration and juvenile delinquency."  You could try to build a case on DF being educational, but between Bay12's other games and more importantly the fact that Toady has said in any number of venues that he does this for fun and personal satisfaction it probably wouldn't withstand scrutiny... and the IRS is nothing if not scrutinous.

Dwarf Fortress: Genocide, it's a way of life.
Dwarf Fortress: Returning the world to its natural state.  As a sea of magma.

Nope, I don't think Dwarf Fortress can possibly get that grant.
"So... your game is about a bunch of dwarfs?"
"Yes sir."
"Building a fortress."
"Yes sir."
"Okay, I can see dining room, living room... and a hallway filled with body parts."
"Those are invaders, they're evil."
"And what's this flooded room for?"
"Breeding mermaids, sir."
"Mermaids?"
"Yes sir.  It let them have mermaid babies, we flush them down to the lower level, where they either fall to their death or drown out of water."
"... why?"
"Their bones are valuable."

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

Kitten genocide and mermaid breeding are emergent gameplay, not the game working as intended. If Toady were to pitch it he would likely not even mention those things.

When the kitten uprising comes they'll wish they gave some funding to DF.

Do you think bay12games counts as a non-profit organization? We should make it into one. It's already non-profit!

Well, it does prevent violence... just imagine all the psychopaths and virtual kitten-killers leaving their computers and being let loose on the rest of humankind :P

(nope, I don't really think, DF-players are inherently more violent, just becasue most of them do atrocities to little ASCII-letters... I feel that this clarification is necessary for people without any knowledge of sarcasm)

Which means that Toady can get the grant if he can prove that it is advocating the religion of Armok.
Of course, we would need to get the Church of the Bloodgod recognized as a religion first...
