Ok Im gonna put a blanket statement here: This thread will contain spoilers. If you dont want your game ruined leave now.

They gone? Ok good.

So: The Upright Adamantine Weapons inside the demonic fortress are kinda... underwhelming in my opinion. By the time you get all the way down to it you probally already have discovered Adamantine veins, and with a little effort have probally already got something just as good. If you know about what it is hiding, the only reason you would pick it up is if you wanted to unleash hell (quite literally). If you didnt know about the demons its total smuck bait. A masterwork weapon sitting in the middle of a bunch of undead? Subtle.

However now the Toady is putting in the groundwork for things like raising undead I thought it might be fun if these weapons got a bit of an overhaul.  These weapons could become truely unique. I think it would be kinda fun to pickup what looks like a regular Adamantine weapon, only to find out anything that dies by it gets raised as undead. Or that the wealer become a bezerker (Blood for the Blood God etc etc).

Anyone elses thoughts? Yes, no, effects that might be cool. Also Im not holding my breath for this kinda thing, Toady has more important things to implement but its fun to spectulate.

Or, wiping out Orc forts. It's harder than it sounds. And it sounds pretty hard.

Well, the lever to release Hell is cool enough in its own right. But conferring the ability to control undead/etc on the wielder, until said wielder gets eaten by demons, would be awesome. But since iirc Hell can be re-sealed by building a floor over the original disappearing one, Might have to do something about that or fix the building destroyers can't destroy stuff above them bug/feature.

You'll have to provide warm, moist kittens at the end of each test chamber.
Dwarf Fortress:
Where 9% of your town is casualties, is good.

I like this thread...a possible alternative idea may be to utilize those secrets slabs to seal off the entry to hell, namely ones with positive or holy spheres designed to ward off the evil below.  The secrets involved may themselves aid you in fighting the demons albeit nowhere near enough to make it an easy fight; you'd need pretty much the same level of ability to defeat them either way, but the benefits of the slab might come in handy for whatever reasons going forward.

This would also tie in to positive forms of "undeath" whose purpose is to guard that entrance to the underworld against intrusion by dwarves/adventurers; this might mean they're not hostile unless you actively make an effort to get to the slab.  The upright adamantine weapons could be fleshed out to include general equipment of that sort, perhaps tying in to legendary heroes' weapons and equipment that were placed there during their quests in worldgen.  Alternatively, those demonic fortresses could be the home of necromancers or other characters who established them over sealed portals to the underworld to reap the benefits of close proximity to evil, whatever those may be.

Either way, there needs to be more backstory to the fortresses and whatever exists inside; right now, they do seem to be a placeholder for something more extensive going forward.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

This, mind you, describes just about all of dwarf fortress.

I'd like some kind of curse associated with it.

"Whoever wields this sword shall enslave all they slay; but be warned, he who wields the sword of Hell must sacrifice one soul per day.

Your adventurer fights his way through the remnants of a conquered fortress, littered with the charred remains of hundreds of dwarves and +forgotten beast tallow biscuits+. He reaches the bottommost level of the complex, and the architecture changes; clearly this area was built long before the fortress was established, and by not-entirely mortal hands. Upon entering a large vault of mysterious dark stone, he comes upon a magnificent bluemetal sword, resting point-down in an engraved platform. The sword shimmers with hidden inner light, and seems drawn towards the adventurer's hand as he reaches to retrieve it. It comes easily from its slot, almost as if it very much wants to leave this place. Upon close inspection, the sword's edge appears unnaturally sharp, and its length is engraved with scenes of violence and depravity. Naturally, the adventurer takes it with him as he embarks on further quests.

Many months later, your adventurer is in the midst of epic combat against undead batmen. The sword has been extremely effective in combat, seeming to seek out its enemies and wound them with uncanny ease. Suddenly, a spark of unnatural electricity leaps from the sword's hilt to your adventurer's face, which immediately deforms and contorts into a foul fleshy portal. Countless demonic beasts surge forth into the material realm, laying waste to all in sight and depopulating the continent.

This is what upright adamantine weapons should do.

Rape your face and then give birth to Hell itself?

Reminds me of a Warhammer 40k story in the Deamons of Chaos book. Mmmm Gribby.

Yeah, someone is describing a 40K daemon weapon.
Anyway, I'd like the addy weapon to be defended by undead, making it difficult to retrieve of course but it shouldn't unleash HFS. That makes it really more a newbie bait atm, as you need plenty of expierience and preperation to break hell, you might as well do it on the traditional way via addy vein.

Thanks for the suggestion, but Number4 is correct: [...] it would be easier and more predictable to just be a racist.

Did somebody just rule 34 two veins of metal?

I think it should be made of slade, since as far as I know there's no other way of doing this without modding. It would be unique, as good as or better than adamantine...would be fun, no?

A warhammer...made out of superdense indestructible stone from hell...

Hell yes. A slade warhammar would be better than addy sword. You can make a candy sword anyway. Slade however...
