From what I've heard, most people seem to advocate powerleveling if you start as a peasant, but that seems really boring to me.  There's no story in standing in one place throwing rocks at your feet to become the best archer ever.  I will say that as a peasant, you definitely need to be more careful.  I tend to focus on killing weaker creatures first, but I've never been patient enough and usually go get myself killed on a real quest before I'm skilled enough for it.  You have the choice of gaining skill by letting a rabbit attack you forever while you dodge, but I think gaining the same skill from several fights is more in keeping with the idea of being a peasant adventurer.

If the alligators and wolves are all in a lion, maybe the lion isn't hungry any more?[/WorksBetterSpoken]

Fight intelligently!

If you bash an elf in the upper body, you might wind him. If you chop at his leg/foot, you will surely cripple him and with both legs chopped off... how does he reach you?

Or, better yet, if you're a wrestler, grab their throat (with an open hand), choke, strangle, kick them while they're not concious untill they die.

Or... bite their eyes off.

For yours just click z for your status (very useful, you can also see your description and scars and such).
For others, you can't.

As for the weapon, I think the sword is quite intuitive to use. I've just started trying hammer, and I find the fights longer (ok it is a silver hammer so...)
One thing to do is think in a realistic way. Because DF is very logical (most of the time... ^^)

Swords are the most balanced weapons iirc. This is my personal playing style but I recommend you put points in Willpower to start out with (so when you take damage you can avoid passing out), get swimming up to level 3 just in case, then divide the rest of your skill points between which weapon you want and dodging.

On an unrelated note, pikes are pretty good for killing big beasts, I believe, due to their high penetration.

Willpower is sort of a hardcore trait imo, that means you're ready to get hit :p
I mostly go with a mix of strength and agility, and put some points in dodger.
Also, train skills like wrestling which can be veeery useful, mostly when you're surrounded, you can choke ennemies just to make them pass out and concentrate on a few at a time.

Bogeymen appear when you're alone at night time. Mostly a few hours before dawn, so if you encounter them, try running and avoiding contact.

Personnally, i'm more sword because loping off hands & foots is easy and very useful to make them lose their weapons :) It's indeed another matter with big beasts, but I haven't had much experience with those (a few cave trolls).

True, but it's easier to train up strength and agility than it is willpower. ^^ I also second the idea of targeted shots to the feet whenever it's possible to actually hit them, since chopping off a foot will almost always slow your opponent enough that you get two strikes for every one of theirs, but even if they're fast enough that that doesn't happen they still won't be able to charge you anymore, which is a HUGE help against enemies like ettins... or everything in general if you're a kobold player like me.

You're right about that. Does Willpower increase when you get hurt ?

What was I saying : playing kobold is completely suicidal x)

That's true, but when you accomplish something it's a lot more epic. I more fondly remember taking down a dragon as a kobold than killing every night creature on the planet as a bronze colossus. (A pocket planet, but still...)
