The Spanish Empire, IN SPACE
« on: May 17, 2011, 08:23:44 am »

After having brought the entire world under their dominion in the 1700s, Spain enjoyed a century of prosperity before discovering new scientific principles through inspiration from god. The conduit of this inspiration was the Saint Tran Newton, as such the science of which he laid the groundwork was called Trans-Newtonianism in his honour. This new science allowed the extraction of divine metals from within the heart of the Earth and travelling faster than can be seen, magical feats made possible only throgh the grace of God.

This technology came just in time, for Earth had been becoming older with each passing year, entering a new ice age according to the erudites, part of a great cycle of warming and cooling that the Earth undergoes through the millennia. Soon earth would be too cold for human habitation without large amounts of infrastructure. Astrologers speculated that there may other worlds among the stars, as such Spain's holy mission from God became obvious. Use the new field of Trans-Netonianism to spread the Spanish Empire to the stars, growing ever great with time, and if there should be other sentients out there, reveal to them the truths of Jesus.

May god be with us.

So yeah, I decided to join the bandwagon and start a Aurora LP. I am the Spanish Empire.

Fun Fact: I actually know almost nothing about Spain.

Nice. Playing as a belligerent theocracy?

That's odd. Do you have a system selected? (as in, try going to System Information <F9>, and then click System View from there). Sometimes when I'm playing around with SM mode, if I delete a system so that there's no active system selected, then System View does weird things.

Also, I'm not going to be able to read about your empire without thinking of Drive. (It's a webcomic set in a future space empire created by a Spanish engineer who reverse-engineers FTL drive from a crashed alien ship. So the capital of the Empire is Madrid, and Spanish is one of the two official languages).

Won't open that either.

And that webcomic sounds awesome. Hopefully gonna give you a update on the game later today, so has been pretty boring, just researching and surveying the other planets.

I'm sure I have no idea what you mean.

THE YEAR IS 1890 AND SPAIN IS THE SOL SOLAR SYSTEM.

Further advances in the Trans-Newtonian sciences were achieved in the year 1850, unlocking the final key required to start building faster than light Ships for the Spanish Navy of Space! However it was decided that first the technology should be further advanced before building ships, for example making the engines faster and more fuel efficient. As such the first ship to be built using the new trans-newtonian principles was first completed in 1880, using a MK I Nuclear Pulse Engine and equipped with geo survey devices in order to search for other concentrations of the TN metals throughout the rest of the solar system. It was christened the Santa Maria.

Eventually it completed mapping out most of the solar system, but the situation didn't look good. Earth was due to run out of several vital resources, such as Mercassium in a few years and not many of these metals had been discovered on other planets. Mining colonies had been established on Mars, Venus, Triton and two Asteroids, along with mass drivers to shoot the resources back to earth, but this would but temporarily sate the endless appetite of the Spanish Industrial Engine, little dribbles of resources that really only made it hungrier. As such the finest geologists Spain had to offer were sent out to search for any other overlooked deposits of what had in a few years become the lifeblood of the Spanish Industry.

For the rest of Spain had been busy during the laborious research and exploration of the rest of the solar system. All of Spain's pre-TN industry had been converted into the improved, more efficient versions made possible by the principles of TN technology and some advances in the field of Civilian Economics had also been made, further strengthening the burgeoning economy. Indeed, several terraforming installations had also been built to combat the cooling of the sun by releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Sadly it seemed that only Venus was currently a option for colonization in the Sol Solar system, all the other planets being too cold, research on possible methods of rapid travel to other systems through so called "jump points" what have to be speeded up, for time was running out for Spain. Soon Earth would be too cold to live on, even with the greenhouse gases being constantly pumped into the air, for eventually the air would become to thick to breath if more greenhouse gases were pumped into the air, suffocating Earth's inhabitants.

With resource shortages and a rapidly approaching literal deadline, Spain needed a miracle and it needed it soon.

The message I get when I try to open System View. This is really annoying as I have trouble seeing what planets I can actually colonize and such:

EDIT: Also, civilians are seen as a "alien race" whut.

Ahh...yeah, I've had that before. IIRC, you need to make sure that DLL is on your system, and if it is and you're still getting the error, run regsrv32 on it. Search the Aurora forums for that filename and you should find a post on how to fix it.

I really hope you can dominate Aurora like you did EUIII.

Here is the current tally for Aurora (assuming fairly standard starting conditions):
Systems Ruled by the Spanish: 1
Systems left: 999

I warn you, Aurora is bigger (far bigger) than EUIII.  However, time is indeed on your side.

Oh, and what setting did you chose regarding Invaders (think Antarians from MOO, only you can never find their base, therefore you can never truly stop them from coming), Precursors (sentry robots from a with advanced technology from a previous era), and Star Spawn (space monsters, strangely organized with weapons similar to your own).

Continuing from EUIII, it would probably make most sense to have none of these, as no real parallels exist in EUIII (except Star Spawn sorta resemble the nomads, Invaders act like pirates in some expansions, and Precursors resemble the Ottomans, lol).

Well, who know what's away from earth.

Anyway, I really wonder if you'll manage to own Aurora. It should bring your computer to its knee much sooner than that.

Personnaly, I'd select a much smaller galaxy size, of around 150 systems. With real stars off.

Real stars, 500 systems, can't remember whether alien invaders are on or not.
