Strike the earth!
A section of the cavern has collapsed!
Your fortress has crumbled to its end.

just minding my own business on a glacier... making my ice fortress all nice and tidy, moving the ice
i decide i need more room, so i open up a hole in the ground.
"You have discovered an immense underground cavern!"
Enter.
"You have discovered a long tunnel!"
Enter.
"You have reached a sea of magma!"
Enter.
At this point i was getting a little scared... for reasons that you may all assume why.
However your fears are ungrounded.. reasons being:
1) Apparently my sea of magma was odd, being completely open.
2) As a result, everything fell.
my ice castle was still in the air when this happened, so once it was in the air it melted when it fell. Dwarfs still inside. barely a few frames later, "!!DWARFS!!" appeared across the screen. Soon followed by "Your fortress has crumbled to its end".
i dont know why it didn't just fall when i embarked... making me think that i was safe :(

Well not really that fast, but still the fastest for me, about a year into of my first forts I had pierced the aquifer and had all my dwarves in nice stone living quarters, when I forgot it was there and accidentally unleashed it upon my fort which was now entirely under the aquifer. If I recall I lost most of my 20 dwarves to drowning, with only the woodcutter and the plant gather/farmer still alive. All my food and picks were underwater so I decided to abandon as I had no way to dig and try and drain the fort.

That is hilarious.

Embarking near ogres is also a good recipie for a quick death. Took me about six consecutive forts before I managed to not die in the first month. Then I built an ogre grinder.

Reclaiming a fortress that had fallen to demons (40d).

Embarked with 80 or so soldiers.

Entered the fort, and found and killed the demon (only one was left - my original dwarves had put up a damn good fight).

Lost about half a dozen soldiers in the process.

Urist McSoldier cancels order: initiating terminal tantrum spiral!

Your fortress has been struck down by the cascading tantrum spiral!

Engraved on the floor is a well-designed image of a kobold and a carp.  The kobold is making a plaintive gesture.  The carp is laughing.

It was a glorius day at Gearchasm. Built on the coast of the lake of disease, a sinister lake, seven dwarves met their ends swiftly. Upon arrival, the Urist McEmbarkers were attacked by zombie alligators and carp. The first Urist McEmbarker fell into a murky pool and starved. The second got eaten by an alligator. The third drowned because he dodged into the water. This commotion woke up the Leviathan* who would exhale a toxic mist. The leviathan was angry and corroded the rest. Didn't embark in there again.

Embark.  Start two dwarves digging into the top of the hillside.  Lots of dirt, but whatever.

Next, set a food stockpile.  Watch the little bastards run about, make sure the wildlife isn't getting near the food stores.

"Medtob Twiddletoes is drowning!"

It turns out that aquifer the embark window mentioned?  Was nearer to the top of the hillside than I had though.  Oops.  *facepalm*

Last year sometime, was on a mission to create a waterfall.

Embarked in a nice two river cold climate - yes, it was evil, but what will that matter?

Skeletal crocodile killed a hunting dog straight away and all 7 dwarves ran around and around escaping from the stationary croc.

Formed the miners into a squad to kill it, which they did, then set about chasing and killing the other three or so friends of skeletal croc.  Then one dodged into the river and over the waterfall.  He was friendly with all the others, who went depressed.

Needless to say, nothing ever got mined as the suicidal remaining miner killed the others one by one.

It was like watching Survivor, the way it should be, with murders and death.

I had something similar happen, though it wasn't a cold two river system, or was it in an evil area. It just so happened that my wagon spawned right on top of no less than three gators, and well, even drafting my entire 7 went about as well as you'd expect(especially since they never got time to get equip). Needless to say, I'm not reclaiming THAT spot!

Edit: What's with me and the wildlife?! My next fort just got destroyed by a friggin black bear! A BLACK BEAR! I swear I'm going to embark with a dedicated soldier next time just so I can survive until I get underground!

This fort really does sit on the event horizon of madness and catastrophe
No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

My first .31 fort, I embarked with a river. Wagon was on top of a hill, but I wanted the main entrance to the fort down near the river. I designated a good spot for the main entrance, placed some stockpiles down near the future entrance hall so the other dorfs would have something to do while the miners were making some rocks. Suddenly, a pack of alligators started eating the dorfs (maybe I should have checked the river for critters). They didn't even make it to mid-spring.
