Well, apart from the fact that you just know they'd constantly lock themselves out of the fortress by standing on the wrong side of the door...  :P

I'm actually wondering this, too. That, and why we don't have keys.

That could be fixed if we were able to choose the direction for them to lock the door from.

Talking about walling in (same problem as hypothetical locking in), easier fix would be just standing from same direction that dorf get to here in first place (in 95-99% cases it would be right direction). Unfortunately, game places x,y coordinates around goal tile always in same way, regardless of need.

Because dwarves having to walk over to a door to lock it isn't implemented yet.

Because dwarves having to walk over to a door to lock it isn't implemented yet.
It is deliberately left as is in this way.
