I don't understand why anyone cares about this at all.

Because I don't want to run all the way to the dungeon and then see "Urist McUsefulNPC has been struck down."

Just accepting what the game says because it's a game and set in another world doesn't always work, some concepts are immutable.
If the information given by the game is relevant to the game itself, then it's safe to assume that it is correct (unless we're talking about bastard games that outright lie to you).

It would be consistent, but not necessarily correct.  If someone switches east and west in relation to north and south, that would be incorrect even if every game element adheres to the switched direction.  It would be something the developer would have to fix.  Like a glaring spelling error or accidentally calling all swords axes.
People use concepts like east and west to communicate, after all, and you can't just go switch it around.  You can give it a twist using unconventional camera angles or having the sun rise in other places or having maps with east at the top, but when you face north, east is right. That's what east means. Dictionary!

TL;DR
You can't change the meaning of a word, even if you stay consistent within the game. It's bad manners.
Also, this is unrelated to Terraria since it's doing nothing wrong direction-wise. Goblins are just dense.

But we're not facing north. Probably. You seemed to have missed this vital information.

It's not unrelated because if left is indeed West, then Terraria is wrong direction wise.

MInd you, that's a conditional if. So We might be facing north but the game's being obscure about it.

Goblins are just dense.
That's unrelated, however. They come from whatever direction they want to either way.

So what we'd need to know is if whether we are facing South, or we're facing North and Terraria spins the other way round.
Considering the Tinkerer's comment, I am still inclined to believe the former.

You seem to have trouble putting these two bits together.
Since we don't know whether the camera is facing south or not, we can just assume that it is and in this case Terraria is not doing anything wrong.

I'm just ranting about how what a game tells you, any game (or book or movie), is not always correct even if it works 'in-universe'. It is consistent/canon at most. The meaning of a word should still be the same as in the real world because that's what words are for.
It is important to remain skeptic and don't just go "Oh, NPC says this so it must be correct and doesn't have to be fixed."

Also, I fail to see how the Tinkerer's comment gives any information about the cardinal system at all. All he says is "I can't believe they tied me up and left me here just for pointing out that they weren't going east!"

You are completely missing the flipping point. The NPC doesn't say anything that is not true in the real world. He implies that the goblins mix up East and West (i.e. think that East is right and West is left. Like you guys do. I am the motherfucking tinkerer.) What he says is true in the real world because East is indeed to the Right if you look to the South. The meanings of the words are still the same.

It is important to be sceptic and don't just go "Oh East is always right on a map so it must be the case here too"

Of course if we are facing north then this is obviously false, but this is a detail you seem to keep ignoring.

1. It doesn't matter.
2. I haven't seen any evidence that we're facing south.
3. I don't care.

So how about those mechoeye bosses? :P

In 2d sidescrolling games I always assume north is the direction of my screen.  Maps pretty much always have north at the top, so why would a game break that convention?

That makes sense actually.

When don't I?

Wait crap the snarkasm abbr is not visible. Ah well.

Wait now it is. Bluh.

Doesn't necessarily mean the map isn't facing North, though. 's just that people who keep insisting on calling left West should stop being so friggin' dogmatic and consider the possibility of it not being the case.

Nice picture. Now draw me one where I said that east in Terraria is to the right.

East is to the right of anyone facing north. Period.  We can't tell if Terraria's camera faces north or south, so it's reasonable to assume for now that it faces south, since south is to the right of where east is and the goblin army message seems to mean 'left' when it says 'east'. Check your picture for directions.

What the Tinkerer says is completely irrelevant in and out of the game, since he just mentions the reason for which he was tied up. The goblins could confuse east and west constantly, which would make them right half of the time, or they could have switched directions a few times during the long journey from wherever they came from.  Not to mention that the game itself tells you which way the goblins are coming from, so it doesn't even matter what the goblins themselves think. They're not telling you.

Once again: My argument is that east is 90° to the right of north. There's no sure way to tell whether Terraria is right or wrong about it's cardinal directions unless we know 100% which direction the background is.  If any fictional place assumes that east is to the left of north, despite being consistent about it, it is wrong.

Stop thinking I disagree with you about the cardinal directions. I disagree with citing in-game sources as correct.

I never said that wasn't the case.

Right. Have you been reading anything that I have been saying? That's exactly my effing point in case you hadn't realized.

Stop thinking I disagree with you about the cardinal directions. I disagree with citing in-game sources as correct.
Then why are you keeping telling me that my interpretation of the directions are wrong if you agree with me? Also in what point would the in-game source be incorrect if it is?

Yes, I know that that is your effing point.  If you bothered to read my posts you'd know I never ever disagreed with that bit.

Because arguments are fun.

Also, North is left and South is up. Have fun.  :P
