... so, uh. Does anyone know if smashing multiple triple sets of demon altars actually increases the amount of funmode ores you get? I only smashed two sets (six total altars) in m'small world, but stuff was still pretty plentiful.
Supposedly you always get more ore from each altar, but you get less from each set of 3. First 3 get you the full amount, next one adds 1/2 the amount of the first, third set adds one third of the first, etc. Best dig along depth = 0 to nab all the altars that spawn outside corruption.

So mark the nearest one to your home with torches and a "do not smash" sign, then go wreck the rest of them. Got'cha.

Does that armor math work similarly for the spells?

For my spells right now, with my current accessories and outfit, I'm seeing:
Masterful Demon Scythe: 53 damage, 19% crit chance, 8 mana
Crystal Storm: 35 damage, 19% crit chance, 3 mana
Hurtful Rainbow Rod: 78 damage, 19% crit chance, 7 mana
Laser Rifle: 39 damage, 19% crit chance, 5 mana

With a magic power potion (Yes, I just drank one For Science):

Masterful Demon Scythe: 61 damage
Crystal Storm: 40 damage
Hurtful Rainbow Rod: 89 damage (almost as good as the 100+ damage boosted star cannon, I just need to reforge it some more, eh? Hurtful is only +9% damage, and mythical should have +19% along with other stuff if it's the same as the space gun. :P)
Laser Rifle: 44 damage

I'm wearing full adamantite with the headgear for magic, a guarding sorc emblem (+15% magic damage +2 armor), demon wings, angry obsidian shield (+3% damage), intrepid spectre boots (+3% melee speed, which I will reforge someday), warding mana flower (+4 defense), for 36 defense before potions.

As you can see those are largely spells you have to beat the bosses to make (which I did in multiplayer), but I haven't reforged them much so far.

Magic Power provides a pretty absurd +20% damage too. Probably more useful than ironskin.

Someone on something awful did a test and posted a bunch of images in the terraria thread on there, and sure enough it does help.

Crystal balls do something? I should try the soup, I have a bunch, but it's just food for my NPCs (not that they actually eat it). I did just try what I posted in singleplayer and oddly I still couldn't deal enough damage (to either skeletron prime or the twins; I didn't have enough materials to make one for the destroyer; I haven't found a good source of dark souls) to outpace my slow death due to the long healing potion timeout. (That's using ironskin, regeneration, magic power, magic recovery, etc)

Seems like I'd have to waste a ton of gold reforging things to do enough, or switch spec and weapon, perhaps? Or there's the cheaty meteorite strategy, but that failed miserably when I gave it a shot with no star cloak, no cobalt shield, and the adamantite mage headgear, trying to stand still between dart traps instead of running on the meteorite, but that's not how it was intended to be used. (Without the cobalt shield they just knock you up into the air and then do damage anyways)

In lieu of a cobalt shield, you could attach yourself to the meteorite via grappling/dual hook or ivy whip.

Place a crystal ball and r-click it for the "Clairvoyance" boost, it boosts magical abilities.

Souls are really easy to farm.
For light souls just bring 50 meteorite and set up a meteorite biome inside underground hallow, kill meteor heads for souls.
For night souls just summon an EoW in underground corruption, though I suppose you can do the same with meteor heads.

Oh, monsters only drop light/night souls in the cavern layer or lower i.e. when the background turns into gray bedrock.

Crystal balls give you an overall magic buff, +20 max mana, and a magic boost I think. Right click it to get the boost. It's pretty awesome!

Wire a 1-sec repeaters to it, then place a thin layer of lava. Stand underneath the room to collect the gel.

Mine's a bit improved with two statues with two inputs each. Ignore the dart traps and such, that was mostly just testing.

I've BEEN using hellfire arrows. Before that, I used CWAR with crystal bullets and the damage was just too low, as I couldn't finish it before dawn.

Then I went the melee route and he died in less than 5 minutes. ::)

I used CWAR with crystal bullets. He died quite quick, actually. Less than 4 minutes for sure.
