But you aren't being surprised by greatness, you are totally missing it and instead saying "Well, that would be better if..."

Everything could be better so if you are searching for something that can't be improved, you aren't going to find anything

Perfection in design is not achieved when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing more to take away.

Also greatness is not negated by faults. No in fact Greatness shines through its faults.

Sand box games always present this strange problem. Players can't say "I beat it! That was fun!" Instead they are left to toil in the world and think about what they wish it was.

It doesn't always present this problem. You can give players some idea of what the logical point they "beat it" is at and then allow them to experiement on their own.

It is why I can say I beat The Sims 3 so to speak, even though there is no actual stopping point.

As I said in another thread. It is the difference between Legos and Legos where you can just so happen to become the greatest being woh ever lived.

I think that evaporation thing was annoying, but it's stopped me from digging straight to hell when I had the pick and nothing else, until I got bored and tried anyway.

It didn't take, I found tons of lava on the way to get obsidian for. 4500 bricks so far!
How tall are large worlds?

Anyway, talking about epic things people have done here, i'd vote for that Terrariavania. Least I think it was one of you...

Looks awesomesaws.
k' I started exploring the world i'm in sideways. It's got loads of thin high cliffs and surface treasure. I know you've had surface hells before though, so it's not so odd.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Being creative in construction is a lot harder when you have an inexplicible compulsion to make everything out of metal bricks.

Everything has to be shiny

I need to plate the world in metal

True. Finding a floating island is hard without a minishark or a very expensive gravitation potion, and even then, there's a chance that the bricks and walls there are made out of copper, when you're aiming for gold and vice versa. Farming the jungles for gold bricks is nice, if you're also looking for mud and other jungle-y items, but it is very inefficient as the shrines are few and far in between.

Still seems odd to me that you can't just look up and notice giant fucking islands.

Well, just consider the fact that you can use a dark lance to poke through solid stone walls and find caverns and other goodies.
Not to mention that you can see enemies far above you on the surface when you're underground.

Basically you can see through walls.

Things work very differently when you live on a 2D plane.

If you really lived on a 2d plane nothing would have depth and everything would look like colored lines. You wouldn't be able to tell what anything was.

That assumses that sight worked exactly the same.

Also if sight DID work exactly the same you would be completely blind. As simply speaking... The line is perfectly 2d. Unless you had the ability to see it at an angle (3d) it would be perfectly invisible.

0 width would also be as wide as the entire universe in that dimension, so you can't just assume you would not be able to see based on a 0 width line in 3d space.
