Plus I could build a huge tower and put a tree at the top.

Could someone explain why NPCs won't spawn in this? Have I missed something?

Pretty sure the bottom of the house has to be the same material as the walls. Or at least not dirt. Maybe the background walls need to be the same too? Not as sure about that one.

 The floor can be a different material, but I don't think natural dirt works. Background walls are not a problem so long as the player placed them.

 Digging the toilets they all get.

The cosmetic slots were in 1.0.4, right? If so, then between then and now (1.0.6):

- Herbs and buff potions
- New furniture (sawmills, bookcases, looms)
- Kegs and beer!!!!
- Severe health potion nerf, now you have to wait 1 minute between uses
- Natural regeneration and subsequent uselessness of the nurse
- Status effects (On Fire, Poisoned, Cursed, and Darkness)
- Dungeon chests are now locked, keys come rarely from pots and mobs, 100% chance from new Dungeon Slimes
- Flamelash and Magic Missile now go in a line (still controllable, it just flies in a straight line when you let go)
- Floating Island chests are locked (needs keys, see above)
- Shadow chests in underworld, locked with shadow keys from dungeon (luckily, these keys are multiuse)
- Flamelash and Magic Missile more rare
- Obsidian backwalls
- New obsidian structures in underworld, not just hellstone brick
- Hellstone makes lava when you destroy it
- Lava slimes don't make lava anymore
- Sparks from meteor and molten armor don't give off light (still visible in darkness, just no light)
- Throwing knives (I think, may have been earlier)
- Oceans really got some more depth (ha ha ha), now have coral, jellyfish, crabs, SHAAAAAAAARKS
- Deserts are fleshed out, cactus added, new mobs (vulture, antlion that shoots sand)
- Glowsticks for underwater (may have been earlier)
- Torches don't work in water anymore

I think that's it. If I missed anything, please help.

That would be a nice summary.

With new furniture came around 30 decor items, like bath tubs, clocks, chinese lanters and other stuff to make decors nicer

Dungeon is slightly harder what with large balls on chains and spinning fire wheels and the need to hunt for golden keys. Also jungle will now rape you with powerful HORNETS EVERYWHERE.

 The hornets were pretty bad before, now they shoot poison darts. Still swarms of the bastards everywhere.

Ehhh before the issue was that space was so limited they were pretty much bound to get a hit in, but were otherwise not an issue if you kept spacing in mind.

They weren't a big deal and my jungle was WAAAY too crampt.

Yeah I never really had much of an issue with hornets either.

So I've started making a new castle since the old one is so small, ugly and cluttered. This isn't nowhere near done, but it has 2 rooms for NPC:s, 1 room for me, a dining room, workshops and some misc. rooms. Opinions?

The dining room tables will have some chandeliers on them to give the room some color, and once I raid some dungeons for more blocks, I'll fill the bookcases as well.
