EDIT: I haven't been able to play until yesterday, so a bit late to the party, but does anyone else love the new eater of souls and hornet AI? Also, has anyone else used it as evidence for the hypothesis that eaters of souls live in a hive society? Also also, has anyone gone further with that and toyed around with the idea of basic teamwork/pack hunting (such as a large group gathering, the small ones attacking to gauge the strength of the target, the medium ones moving in if the small ones aren't doing the job, and the big ones attacking if you're still alive after the other ones)?

So, anyone here tried hardcore mode ? I've started a HC character in a new world as soon as 1.5 came out, so far i didnt die but i came awfully close a couple times (once against a jungle bat in an early recon mission, and once against a shark while i was harvesting coral). I'm in silver armor, with gold tools and a demonite bow.

The eye of cthulhu popped by itself a bit earlier, and i managed to fend him off unscathed, using throwing knives and shurikens in phase 1 and a golden bow in phase 2.

I have 240 hp/120 mana right now, i also have a plant farm with blinkroot, daybloom, moonglow and waterleaf.

My most important piece of equipment is a magic mirror that i was lucky to find early, it certainly helps a lot when in a pinch (i would have died against the shark without it), and i also got my hands on a CIAB, hermes boots, grappling hook, lucky horseshoe and an aglet. So, yea, so far so good, the only thing i don't really like with hardcore mode is that i tend to play a bit TOO conservatively, not taking any risk, etc... and it's probably less fun than strolling around without fear.

Yeah, I tried it with a friend. It was his first time playing, so he died quite a bit. Luckily he didn't find any crystal hearts.
Also, I had a solo HC character. I found a crystal heart in the stone layer and used it, then as I tried to just across a pit to get back, I misjudged it and landed on the 1 block that wasn't underwater, then was killed by 2 motherslimes and a skeleton as I was trying to figure out where the hell they were.

My current (non-hardcore) character's armor has progressed like so:

Copper -> iron -> silver -> silver/jungle (jungle hat & pants, silver chainmail) (WHY MUST I PUNISH MYSELF SO)

The spear I found early on really helps in the jungle. It took forever to actually kill anything, but I didn't get hit too many times, usually just ambushes by man eaters hiding in the walls. The first thing I made was a blade of grass, which is now the only sword I will ever use until I can get Night's Edge, and then a thorn chakrum. Now all I need is 63 more jungle roses and one more vine so I can make an ivy whip and jungle shirt, then I'll start looking for more life crystals. I've only found five, and three of them were on my latest trip down there.

On another note, I am now completely addicted to spelunker potions. They're the only reason I found enough gems for my jungle armor.

yea spelunker potions are great, not only do they show ores and gems, but chests, heart crystals and plants as well

I found lots of hearts in the stone layer, right now i have around 340 hp i think. Still not much luck with the chests, mostly i got doubles of items i already had. I started adventuring in the corruption but didnt get too far. I'll probably break 2 orbs and kill EoC a couple times and then try my luck with the EoW, for the shadowscale armor.

Oh and i was wondering, can you use gravity potions to fly and find floating islands ?
