Yeah. There has to be a certain amount of it though. 2 blocks deep should do it.
Also a word of warning: Cacti absorb blocks above them when they grow. So don't put anything over them.

Wait, does this mean you can use Cacti as some sort of breaching doomsday flood the dungeon with lava on an odd, time it takes for the cactus to grow timer system?

Except that I'm pretty sure cacti grow fairly quickly.

Yeah, maybe you need to do that to get seeds too.

In fact, water and lava are what's needed to bloom.

I'd imagine near, since you can't very well retrieve items in magma.

Here's my fully functioning herb garden. If you want to get your herbs to blossom, just follow what I do in this:

Everything grows fine in regular pots.

Fireblossom needs to be submerged in lava.

Waterleaf needs to be submerged in water. (which doesn't make any sense considering where they come from.)

Note that you can plant the stuff without those requirements but they won't blossom and you won't get any seeds when you harvest them.

How are you getting dayblooms to bloom so well? In my garden they rarely if ever do. I figured it had something to do with light level, considering moonflowers seem to be having the same problem.

Dayblooms only bloom at day, Moonglows only bloom at night.

I have found, though, that alchie potions do alright for very-early game selling. 20 silver for a 10 stack, and blinkroot + cactus is pretty easy to get a junkload of.

Also noticed that blinkroot spews seeds like they're going out of g'damn style. Makes it so you don't have to wait for all the plants to bloom before harvest, which is sorta' nice. If you want blinkroot.

I've got a 100 pot blinkroot farm on Kael's server. It's full of blinkroot. My daybloom farm on the surface has about five pots (out of another hundred) full. I started the daybloom one before the blinkroot one

I really wish blinkroot blinked out of synch, though. That'd be much prettier (and perhaps epilepsy inducing.).

Anyway, can't wait until Terraria goes full Harvest Moon on us. Wide spread seed planting, watering (lavaing, for lavablossom), mass harvesting, etc.

We could get like a kitchen and make food that gives tool speed, defence and other buffs.
