I made my way down to hell, stole a forge and began mining hellstones. I lack the gear survive this but tried anyway.  I spent at least twenty 200hp potions in the battle and I didn't get enough hellstones to build a single item. I am thinking I should call down some meteorites for the next level of gear before I try again.

I know, I still wasn't able to make enough bars for anything cool even though I blew through half my potion stock.
The obsidian was easy  to come by, the problem is that I take to much damage from the deep monsters and I can't harvest surface shrooms fast enough to keep my potion stocks up.

I've found the eternal connecting problem is usually either a problem with my port forwarding or my firewall.

Have you tried with your firewall off?
Have you made sure port 7777 is forwarded through your router?

Port forwarding isn't necessary on the client. If you're hosting, well, that's a whole different matter, but clients don't need to port forward. I guess it might cause a problem if the host hadn't forwarded his port, but that's nothing you can fix, so don't worry about it. 

The firewall, on the other hand, might be a problem, depending on how aggressive your firewall is. Try disabling it (temporarily!), or at the very least make sure Terraria's on the exceptions list.

Well I did some searching and found that it appears to be happening to quite a few people and started immediately after the patch. So I guess I'm waiting.

Tends to be a lot more efficient to just buy lessers and set up a decent sized glowing shroom farm, instead of bothering to harvest the surface shrooms. It's really easy to make an industrial-scale farm that'll keep you in the glowfungus indefinitely. If you make it large enough, you can pretty easily use the excess shroomage to supply the coin for the other half of the ingredients.

As for hellmining, the usual applies. Knock th'fireballs out of the air, pave over the lava (oh gods, do not leave open lava pits), keep an eye out for th'serpents, and don't try it on MP. Hellmining is for singleplayer *nods*

You seem to have got all that, though. Maybe invest in th'autoclicker and a decent speed weapon, if you haven't already, to keep the fireballs away? Or hunt down a balloon -- I find the serpents easier to avoid with that than th'cloud, and easier again with both. SP hell is almost serene, really...

Yeah, I don't bother with surface shrooms, merchants sell lesser HP at a pittance, and in a pinch, glowing shrooms heal half as much as the lesser potions themselves.

For hellmining, I have a set of shadow equipment and was lucky enough to find a feral claw. With that and my cobalt shield, it pretty much nullifies fire imps.

I love when bone serpents catch me these days. A single stick of dynamite can net me a ton of cash to get more dynamite, and maybe a sunfury/flamelash as well. I've already got 4 sunfuries, after selling 6 of them.

I have found the EoW to be easy, while the EoC to be annoyingly insane. Still, I now have a nightmare pickaxe

but, that could just mean the server genuinely isn't up.

EoW is a pain if you split him too much. A whole bunch of splits will chew through lesser armor rather rapidly, faster than you can gulp potions down.
I suppose that's part of the challenge, restraining yourself so you don't split him too much. It's too easy to do with with the ball o' hurt.
When I tried him with silver armor + ball o' hurt, he split a billion times and eventually ganged up on me from every side.

For some reason it feels easier with an ordinary melee weapon.
