Right now I am trying to find a floating island, but have no idea how far up they are, so I am basically just making a giant bridge in a  straight line.

I was lucky enough to get the Three items I needed from the Three Floating Islands I found.

In a MP game my brother and I held, we measured the average distance between floating isles. A good note to keep in mind if you find one: the average distance between each one is 1200 feet.

So I've finally got my lakebed finished, now all I have to do is fill it with water. It's a small lake, only 115 tiles wide or so, but it took a while to build. The very center of the (sand) bottom is held up by a single torch. Once it's full, I could flood my entire building below the lake (depending on how many NPCs open their doors).

And now for my second goblin invasion in as many days. This time I have prepared thoroughly: Youtube is up, with an epic song ready to go, well over 2000 meteor shots are in my inventory and everything on my hotbar is some variant of weapon, with the exception of the Ivy whip and healing potion. Also, minishark. Let the reaping commence.

I killed my first goblin invasion with a musket, about 500 regular musket balls, and ten health potions (only three of which I used).

It depends on what you have. If you've anything less than meteorite/demonite, don't bother. If you have armor around Shadow level, and a decent weapon, bring lots of pots. If you have a star cannon, just bring a stack of stars and a decent aim.

If by horrible you mean horribly broken, yes. if you mean it's a shit weapon, I have to disagree.

Matt: The only real use for it is to upgrade it. The damage it does is crap. I suspect the firing delay is the same as a handgun, the only difference being that the minishark is auto.

EDIT: OK, turns out there's a 2 point difference in the use speed. :shrug:

Only if you have a fuckton of stars to waste. I can think of better uses for my hard-earned stars, namely mana crystals and mana potions.

By the time you have enough spare gold to get a minishark, and you don't have capped off mana, you're doing something wrong.

As for mana pots, why would you ever need one? Unless you decided to fly around the universe, the only time when you would need them was if you desperately needed mana for some reason, which I just can't imagine.
